About this ebook

This is a 12,000 word novelette that takes place between Cruel Justice and Impeding Justice and is based on actual events.
It may not be homicide, but to DI Lorne Simpkins it's still murder.

When a reporter friend of DI Lorne Simpkins gives her a tip about a story involving ex-racing greyhounds, Lorne is sceptical.
But after delving into it, she's horrified to discover the grisly fate of racing dogs that are no longer useful to their owners - and she's determined to bring the cruel and uncaring owners to justice...

"Animal welfare is so close to my heart, the real-life plight of these former racing dogs moved me to tears.
I'm delighted to donate all profits of the book to PUPS, The Protection of Unwanted Puppies Society."

    Foreword

    By

    Sheila Tremellen MBE

Animals have always been an important part of my life, so it seemed quite natural that I should run a charity called The Protection of Unwanted Puppies Society (PUPS) to rescue, rear and re-home those puppies which have become unloved and unwanted.

I met Mel when she offered a caring home to one of my collie puppies.

Dogs give a great amount of love and loyalty to their owners and deserve respect, love and care in return.

Unfortunately, this is often not the case and in this novellette, Mel highlights the terrible cruelty suffered by some racing greyhounds when they are of no further use.

At present, I have in my care a young greyhound bitch that was abandoned and consequently hit by a car. Her front leg was broken in several places.

Originally it was thought the leg would have to be amputated, but after careful nursing it has now healed. She has been very lucky, many are not.

Animal charities are NOT government funded and are usually overcrowded and short of money.

If, as a result of reading this novelette, anyone feels they could offer some support I know both rescue workers and dogs will be very grateful. And Mel will have achieved her wish to entertain the readers and also to promote animal welfare, a cause close to her heart.

My new blog that Mel has offered to manage has now been created. Please bookmark it to keep up with P.U.P.S numerous charity events.

    Prologue

The dark blue Ford transit screeched to a halt, a thickset man in his thirties jumped out and unlocked the tall wrought iron gates.

The two detectives looked on with interest.

What do you think you’re doing? Lorne asked as her partner undid his seatbelt and pulled back the door handle.

I’m gonna get a closer look.

She shook her head and blew out an exasperated breath. Stay put. Give them a chance, Pete. I’ll call for backup. I don’t like the look of this, she said, phone in hand ready to punch in the designated number that would give the necessary signal to deploy the team.

Ssh ... Did you hear that? Pete said.

A gunshot. They looked at each other, eyes wide in shock.

    Chapter One

    Two days earlier.

One of these days you’ll give your mouth a rest.

Through a mouthful of ham and mushroom pizza, Detective Sergeant Pete Childs complained, What’s up now? I was just saying —

DI Lorne Simpkins halted him with a raised hand. And I’m asking you not to, at least not until you’ve finished munching on that trash.

Pete looked offended but that wasn’t unusual, he was always offended when she chastised him for eating too much unhealthy food.

Luckily, the phone rang interrupting their minor squabble. Lorne averted her eyes, choosing the view out of the office window at the brick wall of the building opposite over watching her partner bolt down the remains of his lunch.

    DI Simpkins.

Long time no hear. Thought you were supposed to be getting back to me last week?

Lorne’s heart sank before she replied to her best friend. Maddie, God I completely forgot. How’s things?

I admit they could be better. This new boss of mine is a proper slave driver. Still enough of that, I might have something for you.

Maddie, an old friend from school, was a journalist with a local TV station who quite often gave Lorne tipoffs of local crimes.
