The Blood Dynasty Chronicles - Volume One Boxset - David L Dawson

PART 2 – THE STREETS ARE PAVED WITH BLOOD

    1

I can’t believe you met Darin, Veronica gushed.  I am so envious of you right now I could scream.

Ashlyn blushed and said, I looked right into his eyes.

The sun was waning above them as the night drew in.  The bench in the park was surrounded by shadows and bird noises.  Ashlyn could feel the cold nip at her skin.  She didn’t mind the eerie surroundings.  She had her friend to gossip with.  Everything was as it should be.

Is he as hot as we imagined? Veronica asked.  Please tell me he’s as hot as we imagined and doesn’t have BO or something.

Ashlyn smiled, their first proper meeting seeping back into her head.  She’d never forget it as long as she lived.  It had been like looking into the face of the person she had dreamed about for years.  It had been surreal but deeply satisfying and, for her, quite romantic.

He’s just how I saw him in my head, said Ashlyn dreamily.  He was tall and sexy and brooding.

Did he have a nice arse? asked Veronica.

Ashlyn blushed.  I didn’t honestly look. I was too busy staring into his eyes. I bet he has a nice arse.  You have to look and tell me.

Fine.  I’ll look and tell you.

Promise me! Ashlyn nodded and they giggled, content.  She could stay like

    this forever.

I miss you, Ashlyn admitted.  I miss our friendship.

I died a long time ago, said Veronica sadly.  You know that, right?

You’re here with me now.  That’s all that matters.  I just wish...I just wish this was real.

    I wish it was...

Veronica’s words faded.  She slipped off the bench like she was sliding into water.  Ashlyn kneeled down by her friend and saw she was sleeping.

    Veronica? she shouted.  Veronica!

Ashlyn started to panic.  Something was wrong with her friend.  People didn’t just fall asleep like that for no reason!

You have to help me! Ashlyn cried, running towards a young couple holding hands.  I think my friend might be ill.

The couple smiled at her and fell to the ground, sleeping too.  Ashlyn whirled around, looking to the small coffee kiosk at the edge of the park, to see the customers keeling over their seats.  The whole park was falling asleep!

A cold hand touched her face.

Am I everything you imagined, hmm? Jensen asked.  Am I everything you thought I would be?

She couldn’t look at him.  He was too beautiful and too much of what she wanted.  He was a killer and a vampire.  She couldn’t fall into him.  If she did then she was condoning his murder of Esme.

Vampires kill, Jensen whispered.  Did you think we were all as cuddly and neutered as your pathetic Darin?  We have to kill to survive.

You only need a drop of blood a day.  You didn’t have to kill her.

    Maybe not.

    Don’t turn around...don’t turn around...

Does that matter, though? said Jensen.  You want me and I want you and I think you’re fascinating.  Just think of what we could do together.  I’m unhappy with my life and so are you.  We could make each other happy.

She couldn’t help it.  She had to turn around; just to make sure he really wasn’t as gorgeous as she’d imagined he could be.  Fantasy never lived up to reality, right?

    Darin...Jensen...

As she was turning, an overwhelming pain sliced through her neck.  She struggled to free herself, only to find Jensen was gripping her arms.  He was biting her!

Oh, you taste so good, he groaned.  Like the nectar of the gods!  I can’t get enough!

Can I have a taste? Vienna inquired.

Vienna Sublime slithered from out of the dark and snatched hold of Ashlyn’s arm.

    Please, no, Ashlyn begged.  Vienna...

Vienna bit down on Ashlyn’s wrist and she screamed.

    *****

Ashlyn woke with a scream, her voice echoing around her cell like she was in a recording studio.  She hoped nobody had heard her.  No matter what Jensen tells me, he is still a murderer and he is still a vampire.  I can’t trust him.  Don’t ever look in his eyes!  They will betray you.

The door to her cell flew open and Dotrice and Jankin charged in.  Ashlyn saw she was still clutching the secret letter from Union Jack and quickly hid it under her pillow.

What is the matter, girl? Dotrice demanded, her normally perfect hair in a chaotic mess.  You screamed the whole place down.

Ashlyn wiped at her eyes; they were wet with tears. I had a nightmare, she confessed. I’m sorry if I woke you.  It won’t happen again.

Dotrice looked at her kindly before turning to Jankin.  Leave us, Jankin.  The poor girl doesn’t need half the staff traipsing through her cell at this time of the night.

Will you be okay? Jankin asked sympathetically.

    Ashlyn smiled.  I will.

Jankin smiled at her and left, closing the door behind him.  Dotrice sat on the edge of the bed. Ashlyn expected some sort of reprimand. While she hadn’t expressly stated it, she assumed Dotrice must be in charge of all the slaves. The woman acted like an authority figure.

    Talk to me, Dotrice offered.

Ashlyn didn’t know where to start.  Could she trust her?  Did she have orders to tell Lady Catherine everything the slaves were up to?

Are you Catherine Sublime’s personal slave? Ashlyn asked.

I am, Dotrice confirmed.  Does that matter?

Ashlyn sat up in bed, putting her back against the icy wall. She wiped at her moist eyes again, the fear and the terror and the confusion of her dream still fresh in her mind.

They confuse me, Ashlyn admitted.  One minute Catherine was all mother figure, telling me I could talk to her, and the next she was this insane bitch.  Jensen is charming and nice but the next minute he’s murdering a maid.  I don’t know what to feel for them.

Dotrice surprised her by taking her hand.  The woman looked to be in her late sixties but Ashlyn had a feeling she was a lot younger than that.  Ashlyn didn’t know why she knew that; it was just something in her eyes.  Working for a vampire was obviously not good for your
