    Author’s note

Whatever you do, do NOT read this novella before reading book 2.  You will be heavily spoiled for some of that book’s secrets.  It’s okay to read it after book 2, though.  Hope you enjoy Skye’s first solo book!

    ONE

The world is open to me for the first time.  My dads don’t have any say in what I do.  My brother can’t boss me around.  My best friend can’t be there when I need him.  This is my Journey.  I’m on my own for the first time.

    I hate it.

    I really hate it.

I sit in the branches of the tree and watch the Glass Palace.  Light shines off the roof and I can hear Ben’s mother shouting at something.  I can smell stew cooking.  It looks so inviting.  I could slip back inside and tell my dads that I needed to prepare more, or I was feeling ill, or I’d spotted a Felum hanging around near the house.  Nobody would have to know that I wasn’t ready.  I don’t want people to think I’m a coward.

    I’m scared.

I thought I saw you hanging around in the bushes, says a voice.  What are you doing?

I look down through the leaves and see my brother.  He is looking up at me, an amused smile on his face.  I don’t want him to see me like this.  I don’t want him to think that I’m weak and pathetic.

Skye? he calls, concerned.  Talk to me or I’ll go back and fetch our dads.

I don’t want that.  I don’t want to see the disappointment on their faces.

What do you want? I demand.

You told me you were ready, he says.  I took you to one side and asked you if you were truly ready for this, and you told me you were.

I cross my arms.  Of course I’m ready.  I’ve been ready for this for a while but you and our dads wouldn’t let me out any sooner and I was dying to go but you were so...

His eyes seem to glaze over as I ramble.  I know I ramble.  Sometimes I have to talk fast or the thoughts and ideas might vanish from my brain.  I know what people think of me when I ramble.  They think I’m simple and they talk to me like I’m simple.

Do you want to come back? he asks me.

    I don’t answer him.

We can explain, he says.  If you’re really not ready, then I don’t want you going out and getting yourself killed.

We all have to do this when we turn fourteen.  In the House of Casper, you are expected to be able to fend for yourself and know how to survive on your own.  You’re expected to gain confidence and learn what you want to do.  That’s why we’re forced to go on a Journey.  I’d been looking forward to it.  I was sure this would be the adventure of a lifetime and that I’d relish the opportunity, but now that I’m out here, I’m scared and I want to go back home where it’s warm and safe and I have people who look after me.  Who knows what’s lurking out there in the real world?  Why do I even need to learn how to survive when I live with a community of people who could help me if the need ever arose?

I’m not a quitter, though.  I want to be assistant to Doctor Kahn, and to be that I need to complete my Journey.  I have to face my fears head on.

I climb down the tree carefully and land on my feet.  I smile at my brother and say, I’m not going back.  I’m going to do this and I’m going to do it well.  I will come back an adult even if it kills me.

He kisses me on the cheek and says, "Don’t
