    Excellence at a Minimum - Waleed Shamsid-Deen

Praise for Excellence at a Minimum

Excellence at a Minimum will not only be a game-changing book for its readers, if followed wholeheartedly, it can truly become a lifestyle. Certainly, it is for Waleed. Waleed shows how success comes through consistent and strategic hard work, yet shows so graciously that all of that work means nothing if it’s not guided by a moral compass.

    —Brandi Mitchell

    Producer, Author, Visual Brand Strategist

Waleed is one of the most professional people you’re ever going to come across. On top of that, he gets things done—which is a trait that is very hard to find!

    —Jonathan Bender

    Professional Athlete, Social Entrepreneur

Mr. Shamsid-Deen’s 5 Keys to Success have allowed me to set a firm entrepreneurial foundation for successful business practices. These principles have not only helped me grow and sustain my business, but also helped me see my business potential on a global scale and my personal potential in the community.

    —Adeidra D. Washington

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I must first take a moment to thank my family for the support they have given me in my quest to become a successful entrepreneur. My mother and father, Lawrence and Edith Shamsid-Deen, and all of my siblings: Vincent, Attlee, Zahporrah, Ifraj and Khadijah. Over the years, we have laughed, cried and struggled together as a family of business owners. Each of you truly understands the plight and the responsibility it takes to pursue business ownership in this great country. To my Uncle Jesse and Aunt Essie, who introduced my father to the world of entrepreneurship and laid the foundation of business, I say thanks. I must also acknowledge my children Na'im, Layla and Siraj and their mothers, for their understanding and support as I work and sacrifice to provide for our family, as well as future generations.

Thanks also goes to Imam W. Deen Mohammed, Imam Ibrahim Pasha, Imam Plemon T. El-Amin and Imam Mansoor Sabree for their example and spiritual leadership of the Muslim community nationally and locally. I want to acknowledge Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Allan Houston, Jonathan Bender and Rod Strickland for the business experiences they have given me in both the for-profit and nonprofit worlds.

My partners in DRUMline Live, my board of directors and supporters of Youth V.I.B.E., my employees and their families— thank you for being an extended part of my family. To Adeidra Washington, Rawn Mashburn, Amin Aleem, Delethian Murray, LaTashae Walker and Wali Rasheed—thank you for your continued support, sacrifice and commitment to the mission and vision of our organization.

Thank you to my writing collaborator Jasmin M. Goodman, my illustrator Nicholas Hoo and my professional advisors, business colleagues and mentors: Adrienne Lance Lucas, YoLanda Bethea, Andrew Schutt, Anthony Smalls, III, Lecester Bill Allen, Brandi Mitchell and Spike Lee for helping to make this project a reality. To my close friends Reginald Maddox, Alberto C. Duncan, Michael Johnson, Bryan Davis, Brian Reynolds, Gerard Sanders & Quiana M. Scott, I am forever grateful for your support.

A special thanks to Dr. William P. Foster, Dr. Julian E. White, my Florida A&M University family, my freshman brothers and sisters and the Marching 100 for instilling in me the essence of discipline, focus, point and drive and laying the foundation for my commitment to excellence! Hubba Doc!

Without the support of my family and friends, and all of the experiences we have shared over the years, this book would not be possible. Thank you for your contributions and support of my lifelong mission.

    FOREWORD

    Lawrence Shamsid-Deen

This book is an eye opener for young people who want to get a great start early in life. Waleed began keeping up with me and learning how to operate a business on weekends and during the summer while out of school. He asked questions about the work he did because he wanted to be sure he did everything right. One of my proudest moments was when he said, Daddy, I want to be a businessman just like you.

Waleed realized early in life that he wanted to be an entrepreneur so, at age 10, he began to move forward toward reaching his goal. By working hard, he was able to accomplish his desire.

As you read my son’s debut book, Excellence at a Minimum, I encourage you to take notes.
