The last place Liyelu wanted to find herself was at the edges of Zoom lake, but Kimshi was largely considered the most reasonable of the Sires, and she was absolutely thankful he'd reserved a place for Jorn.
The look on her brother's face told her he didn't share the same sentiment, but that was well enough. He'd been a forlorn, sulky frown of a mer from seed to stalk. His sister hardly expected that to change anytime soon.
He flipped a bubble root between his thin fingers now, his mouth drawn in a tight frown. It was obvious by the flash of supreme irritation in his eyes that he was far from pleased with the turn of events which had led them there.
Your boyfriend needs to mind his owns peas, Liyelu.
Because working for rogues is so much better than actual freedom?
Jorn's mouth dropped slightly ajar for a split second before he recovered his expression.
You call the boredom that are Kimshi's lagoons freedom?
I at least call them safe.
Liyelu punctuated her words with a gleam in her eye. She shouldn't be surprised in the least, but she was. Dek had gone to a great deal of trouble to ensure her Jorn's safety, and he'd all but said he wanted to go back into service to the vile rogues who were bent on dominating the other folk inch by inch until nothing moving was left free.
Lowering to the overgrown seashell set by the edge of the water, Liyelu's eyes slid away from her brother's and she drew a tight breath, fanning her fingers out over the top of her high-striped pants. She glanced at the water, a mirthful smile creasing the side of her mouth when a small flipper ventured into the pools.
Jorn followed her gaze over the inky, swath of rippling deep violet waters in the heated chamber. At Kimshi's behest, Jorn was to keep out of sight, and that meant the light of day.
The lagoons touched by the rays of the sun were absolutely off-limits to him. Kimshi was risking a great deal granting him sanctuary. Sashen was a scorching enemy that no one among the mer, save his son Pel, seemed intent to make.
Jorn turned his gaze away from the small flipper child emerging from beneath the waters when another appeared close behind, and his eyes rose to meet his sister's.
Perhaps we'd do well in the dry rooms for the evening.
A look of surprise touched Liyelu's face at his brother's suggestion. Dry rooms were a breeze for her to deal with, but full mer, like Jorn, weren't as comfortable away from the water. His decision only began to make more sense
