About this ebook

Dek has a dilemma he can't smooth talk his way out of. Playing the field isn't doing it anymore for the former "ladies elf," and his brother's blissful new relationship is regularly making his own lack of a significant other a much lonelier reality than it was before Toke took a mate. Adding to this the monotonous work of routinely warding the seized townships, the dark elf takes sure notice when his path is crossed by a pixie whose impression haunts his consciousness. He finds himself swiftly consumed by her and drawn into secrets she tries but eventually fails to keep from him.

    ––––––––

Dek didn't start out intending to be a ladies elf, but he'd certainly earned a reputation for being one. Watching his brother Toke's blissful new union, he begins to find non-committal connections less satisfying than they used to be, and he's blind-sided by the effect a Pixie dancer has on his consciousness from their first meeting. She easily tethers him with her charms, taking hold of his heart, and a love sparked upon a whim grows into an all-consuming fire that Dek soon realizes is more fragile and precious than he could have ever imagined, as his Pixie love is far more than she seems.

Dek's eyes traced the performer's curves as she glided across the small stage in the smoky club. He loathed the insta-cities, but a deal was a deal, and he wasn't one to go back on his word once he gave it. There was also the not-so-little matter of honor. The Pixets were serving admirably at the side of the Orimyr, and there weren't any worthy magicians to speak of in the city any longer. Those who'd chosen to stick around hadn't been officially drafted as rogues, and they knew little of the fiendish practices of their power hungry brethren.

The warding stones had played a significant role in changing the town's vibration; if they'd been just a tad less effective, the Guarding Circle might have been given license  to bring the rogues directly to their knees.

Dek would have personally relished the opportunity to make his disdain for the rogues abundantly clear, but they'd stolen away like thieves in the night, only emerging in bursts to gather energy from the mer they were somehow managing to trick into engaging them.

Most of his kind were thankful to have avoided war, worried as they were that they might be forced to give into the violence the abuse of their kind would awaken in them. It was a matter of tradition to avoid situations which might bring out the worst of the Dark Elf spirit, but Dek actually craved the opportunity to mete out justice to their enemies. The rogues were thieves of the lowest sort, little more than vampires in yellow robes. If they weren't firmly in their place, it seemed obvious to Dek that they would continue to push the agenda associated with their twisted doctrine.

He frowned thinking of them, glad that there was now a way to keep them at bay. The warding stones had to be fashioned differently for the varied families who took part in the Guarding Circle, but they were equally efficient in preventing the tethers of the rogues from ensnaring any more of the 'magikal folk.'

The dark elf lifted his cup and tipped the last of the deep root brew into his mouth. His gaze paused on the empty vessel before he rested it again on the small table before him. The dancer's eyes flicked toward the orimyr, but he didn't meet her eyes just then. Still her attention lingered, like a sort of perked up ear, though most of her focus remained on her performance.

She was a pretty thing, Dek observed, again indulging himself a long look at her petite form, revealed tastefully in a body suit that ended in shoes made of tied and woven ribbons trailing up her ankles. Hers was a striking display of beauty and disciplined femininity.

He briefly wondered how she managed to dance in such insubstantial shoes without revealing the slightest discomfort. It was a marvel to be sure. Dek leaned back in his chair as the server passed by his table and topped off his cup without skipping a beat.

His gaze flicked to the glass, and he frowned at the weight descending his stomach. He'd never been one to partake of
