Passions of the Heart - Kelsey MacBride

    Chapter 1

    Newport Beach, CA

So what'll it be, Doctor Bradley? Do you have what it takes? The mature man with salt and pepper hair peered at Tiffany through wire-rimmed bifocals, a solemn expression on his face as he waited for her response.

Tiffany Bradley pressed her lips together as she kept her gaze fixed on his eyes. The corner of his eyelids drooped slightly where they met the dark circles that hung under his eyes—no doubt from all the years of working long hours at the practice. Doctor Jackson had sacrificed a lot to build Hoag Medical into one of the finest general medicine groups in Orange County. So naturally, he had a reputation as a physician who believed in old-fashioned work ethics and expected no less from his associates.

Tiffany was thankful and overjoyed God had finally opened the doors of employment, allowing her to secure the coveted position over a long list of highly qualified applicants. Three years had quickly passed, and this was the moment Tiffany had been waiting for, culminating her associateship as a family physician with the group. Now she had an opportunity to become a partner if she could prove to the man wearing blue surgical scrubs across from her that she had the drive and determination to succeed.

She didn't want Doctor Jackson to think she was weak or afraid of the challenge because she wasn't. Tiffany was the most successful of the four sisters in the Bradly family, and her siblings knew she was never one to back down from a challenge.

Even though her palms felt moist and there were butterflies in her stomach, she maintained a calm composure. She cleared her throat and gave him a smile.

Of course, Doctor Jackson. You have my word. I'll give the office my one hundred ten percent. This practice means more to me than anything else. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Doctor Jackson leaned forward slightly in his chair.

Good. Then it's settled. If your performance continues at its current pace, you'll be eligible for the partnership by the end of the year. That'll make one heck of a Christmas present, won't it? The corner of his mouth twitched upward for a second before returning to its usual flattened state.

Tiffany wasn't sure if Doctor Jackson had just flashed her a smile. The man wasn't exactly known for his outgoing personality. But it didn't matter. So instead, she gave him a wide grin. That would be the perfect Christmas gift.

Tiffany, you're a great doctor, and I think you'll fit perfectly into this practice. I know you'll have to make sacrifices in your social life, but I have confidence you'll do what it takes to succeed. Are you prepared to make those sacrifices? His brows tilted downward as he searched Tiffany's eyes.

Tiffany sat at attention. Yes, I am.

Great! I'm counting on you. Please don't disappoint me.

I won't, Doctor Jackson. You can count on me.

Now, there's one more thing I want you to do . . .

    ***

There was a grin on her face and a spring in her steps as Tiffany walked out of Doctor Jackson's office.

    Partner.

The word stirred up feelings of confidence, status, and security. It was the reason Tiffany chose medicine as her career. Ever since she was a child, her father had pushed her to get into medicine, saying it would guarantee her a comfortable life, one that was free of money problems, worry, and dependency on a guy. However, while medicine had undoubtedly accomplished those goals and more for Tiffany, there were times when she missed having a guy in her life, a guy who could make her feel special and desired. Someone who could sweep her off her feet and release the womanly desires within.

A sigh escaped her lips as she shook her head.

There was no sense in becoming frustrated about something she couldn't control. Her busy schedule gave her no time to socialize, let alone have room for a man in her life. And things were about to get crazier now that she would become a partner. While she believed God would fulfill her every need, becoming a partner would make her life complete; it would be the icing on the cake.

Tiffany smiled as a mother with her toddler daughter passed by in the hall. Her heart softened as she took note of the girl's freckles and the blue hair bow pinned to the curly blonde locks that flowed past her shoulders. The girl would have easily qualified as a poster child and made Tiffany wonder what her daughter would look like someday. If only she had time for a man in her life. Her thoughts were interrupted by Julie, one of the nurses.

I love those pumps! I've been looking all over for a pair like those. Where did you get them? Julie asked.

You like them? I got them from Saks. Tiffany spun around, modeling them for Julie.

Saks? I'm jealous you get to shop there. Julie placed her hands on her hips. So, how did it go? Did he offer you the position?

    He did.

    Did you say yes?

Tiffany gave her a smile. Of course, I said yes. I'd be crazy not to accept the position.

Congratulations! I'm excited for you. Julie bubbled.

Thanks. It's the answer to my prayers. I've been looking forward to this moment since the first day I started here.

Not to spoil the moment, but you also know what that means. Julie's expression turned serious.

    What?

You'll have a harder time squeezing in time to find Mister Right.

Tiffany let out an exaggerated sigh. "Right now, I'm not concerned about finding Mister Right.

Besides, it's a short-term sacrifice that'll pay off in the end. I'm doing just fine without a guy. Tiffany had repeatedly said that statement to herself, but something deep down kept her from believing it fully. Still, what good would it do her to have people not think she was happy and leaving out her dreams? Why would I want to deal with the headaches of dating when I can be focused on working harder?"

Girl, you work too hard! Julie remarked, shaking her head. All work and no play makes you a dull person. You have to spend some time having fun, or you'll crash.

Tiffany gave her a smile. "Don't worry, Julie.

I'll be fine. Besides, I'll be taking a week off soon. Doctor Jackson wants me to attend a pain management seminar in Yosemite at the end of the month."

Julie frowned. You call that a vacation? It's still working.

I know, but at least maybe I can squeeze in a day or two of sightseeing along the way.

Julie shook her head. You're crazy! You need to learn the concept of how to relax.

What do you mean? Tiffany gave her a puzzled look.

Relax. Like, take a vacation without doing anything work-related.

    "But I can't
