    Orange is the New Black was published by Random House Publishing Group on March 8, 2011.

    Kerman’s goal in writing Orange is the New Black was to depict prison in a different way. She wanted to describe her prison experience in a manner that was unlike the assumptions people usually make about prison.

    Kerman discussed motherhood in her memoir Orange is the New Black. She included an instance when she broke down at the end of Children’s Day.

    Orange is the New Black discusses extensively what actually happens in the conditions of confinement. It talks about what really happens to prisoners during their incarceration.

    A question Kerman raises in the novel is why? She asks why people are put in prison by elaborating the pathways and decisions they make that put them there.

    In her memoir, Kerman expressed how women have a tendency to get themselves lost in the rabbit hole of incarceration where they feel that they have become ghosts to the rest of the free world.
