    Chapter One - The Letter

Tuesday morning, January 25 is a date Tom and Julie will never forget. Life can be strange at times; this morning was about to be the strangest of their life.

Tom and Julie with their two children, 6-years-old, Millie and 8-years-old Zack, lived in a modest home, encumbered with a huge mortgage; in Bankstown, a working class suburb of Sydney.

Both Tom and Julie, like so many other young families, had to work to meet the mortgage payments and survive. Tom worked in a factory, and Julie was employed Tuesday to Thursday as an occupational therapist at a small private hospital.

The day began like any other weekday; Tom would leave home around seven thirty. Julie would drop the children at school an hour later on her way to St Andrews Hospital.

This Tuesday morning gave no indication of being any different. Tom could not have imagined what was about to unfold. He walked into the kitchen to kiss the children and Julie goodbye before leaving for work.

Before you go Tom, there’s a letter for you. You must have missed it last night. It looks official. Julie handed Tom the letter addressed to: Thomas Anderson from the Office of The Public Trustee. Tom was intrigued, Hmmm, I wonder what this is?

Julie began to organize the children’s breakfast while Tom read the letter, he then silently handed it to Julie.

Between two stunned people sitting motionless at the kitchen table, lay the single sheet of heavy cream paper with a smart looking Public Trustee logo and Company header. The body of the letter featured three short paragraphs, followed by an unintelligible signature.

Did you know him? Julie asked.

I had forgotten he existed Tom replied slowly shaking his head.

But he’s your uncle. Julie, the eldest of five siblings in a large, affectionate and close family, was surprised that Tom would have a mysterious, rich relative. She scanned the letter again and read the name aloud, Benjamin Arnold. Wasn't Benjamin Arnold the name of the famous American traitor?

Yep, it was. This Benjamin Arnold was my Great uncle. I hardly knew him. Mom’s maiden name was Arnold; he was her dad’s brother.

"He left the company, Streets of Gold and an estate valued at well over one hundred million dollars!"

Even if he was my mother's uncle; why leave everything to me, he didn’t know me?"

Tom was baffled, although he attempted to rationalize it.

I remember him at mom’s funeral, I was about twenty then. He spoke to me for a while, haven’t a clue what. I recall riding in his black Merc. That impressed me. Mom died nine years ago; she was sixty-five then, he was a fair bit older than her, must have been in his nineties when he died.

The contents of the letter had shocked them both. They could hardly take it in. So much so neither paid attention to the final paragraph of the letter, which read: ...due to uncertainties of origin and taxation obligations, portions of the estate are to be held in trust pending an inquiry and outcome. Please contact this office to arrange a meeting with us.

The entire estate has a valuation set at well over, one hundred million dollars! Tom said out loud as he secured another element into place.

All around, Tom’s coworkers stood shaping and fitting and packaging amidst the constant hammering of the busy factory floor. Although, today it was very different for Tom, he remained oblivious to the noise. He kept saying to himself, a hundred million dollars!

Tom focused on listening to his repetitious statement; could hear nothing else. He drew the figure in his mind. 100,000,000.

HeatMakers Pty Ltd manufactures industrial heaters. Tom was an assembly worker there. He had arrived a few minutes later than usual this morning. His friend and fellow worker, Mike, had greeted him at the factory door.

Morning Tom. He received no reply. Mike's brow creased in concern, Everything OK Tom? He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a packet of cigarettes, scruffy and slightly squashed, and offered it in Tom's direction.

    Eventually,
