    Editorial

Welcome to the first of the 21D Shorts. We have four hardcopy issues behind us and one digital anthology bringing together favourites from those first four issues. So what does the future hold? The 21D Shorts comprise our next volume, envisioned as a series of digital publications with bite-sized pieces. Short, fast, furious, easy to digest reads—a handful of fiction and poems, and with some non-fiction and flash fiction thrown in. With shorter pieces, comes more experimental pieces, those stories that don’t have to always adhere to a structure of plot, character, theme or even dialogue. As long as they still evoke something or someone—that’s what we want to read!

Thanks once more to our fabulous contributors!

    River At Warrandyte

    Lilian Cohen

    Downstream on the river,

    away from waters wrestling

    the crocodile spines of rocks,

    there is a stillness.

    Sunlight dapples the eucalypts

    stealing down the slope,

and patterns stripe across the river

    flowing, solemn, dark and deep.

    I see a child, myself,

astride a sunlit bough, reaching over water

encased by reeds and bird-filled trees

She breathes the laden scents of plants and soil,

wants to hold forever the stillness and seclusion,

nurture it always under her skin.

But decades later by the river

I sense the layers shafting the seclusion.

I sense the fallen limb beneath

    the water’s sun-warmed skin,

    a dam
