    Chapter One - Zack

    Dragon Fact Number One:

Dragons can live for two thousand years!

Ere, what’s your game! a loud cockney voice rang out in the medical room of the recruiting office. You ain’t eighteen years old, or my names not McGinty! How old are you really, boy? The red-faced medical corporal with pale, pop-eyes regarded the young, thin trembling teenager with scorn.

Zach blushed angrily, I’m almost eighteen; I’m just small for my age. I want to fight Hitler! He looked at the tall corporal with pleading, blue eyes. Couldn’t the man just give him a chance!

Now look here, son, said the soldier softening at the sight of the young, dark-haired lad’s distress. You can’t be more than fourteen. What would your mother say, if we just sent you off to war? There’d be hell to pay and I’d be the one who’d suffer it! You get off home and help your folks out, not waste the British Army’s valuable time!

Zach hung his head. At fifteen years of age and being of slight build, he was often mistaken for being younger than his age. But, this was the final humiliation, being told to go home to his mother!

As soon as I’m eighteen, I’ll be back with my birth certificate! he announced mutinously to the corporal. Then, you will have to sign me up!

Let’s hope the war’s well and truly over, by then! muttered the soldier, beckoning the next man for examination.

Zack walked home through the misty streets of London with a heavy heart. It was just his luck to be born too late, to fight in the war! More than anything he wanted to become a soldier and be sent abroad to fight the Germans and help England survive. If only he was just a few years older!
