This is Part 4 of The Last Plane out of Paris. As this is a series, I advise you to read Part 1 before you read this one for you to fully understand what is going on.

    Chapter 1: Saint-Dizier

Jim spun the wheel to the left to avoid hitting the animal. The Renault swerved off the road. He pumped down on the brakes as the car rolled down a grassy slope. They were thrown forward as the vehicle hit a tree and stopped. He threw the door open and staggered out as he tried to comprehend what had just happened.

Francois was helped out by Marie and held at gunpoint.

Marcel walked to the front of the car and looked to see what damage had been done. Apart from a bent bonnet, and some broken glass, it looked fine.

Phew, that was lucky, Jim muttered as he walked over to Marcel. Do you see any major damage?

No, but we won’t know until we test the car, Marcel replied.

Let’s try it now. While Marie and Marcel waited beside the Renault, Jim climbed in and started the engine. It spluttered a few times before coming to life. He tried to reverse. Marcel went to the front and checked the headlights. He frowned. I think you’re right. The glass is pretty smashed up, which means that it’s highly likely that the actual light bulb got damaged as well.

But how are we going to travel if our headlights don’t work? Marie exclaimed.

That’s a good question, Jim replied. And one I don’t know an answer to. He glanced up at the sky. However, we still have the moonlight. That’s better than nothing.

But it will take forever to get to Saint-Dizier travelling at that slow speed, Marcel said.

I know, Jim said nodding, "but that’s all I can think of. I think we can rule out making it to the
