    Episode 9: Lover's Knot

    The group crowded around the Admiral's table were an unlikely bunch of allies. Lucy sized each of them up in turn. Admiral Cartwright himself was there, spectacles gleaming. He gave her the barest hint of a smile. The Governor stood next to him, hovering awkwardly over a tray of tea and other refreshments.

    Anja sat opposite the Admiral, her chin at a regal altitude. Beside her was Diego the… whatever he was. A friend, Lucy supposed. As good as any she had left anymore.

    Well, excepting the remnants of her crew — Mordecai the red-bearded giant (and formerly her master gunner on the Relentless) and Pudding, the soft-chinned navigator. They were the only ones who had stood by her, all she had left of her crew after the — was it mutiny? Could it be a mutiny if she hadn't even been on board the Relentless to be overthrown? Whatever it was, it was unforgivable.

    Lucy stood as tall as she could (which wasn't especially tall) and threw her shoulders back. The last few months I've been searching for my brother, for his ship the Sunbird, and for his lost treasure, whatever it is. Every one of us here has been mixed up in this, and I think a few of you know a lot more than you're telling. I think it's time to put all our cards on the table.

    Her eyes narrowed and she wheeled on the Admiral. You first. What do you know about Robert? You told me you know where he is!

    The Admiral stood and paced around the table, his peg leg rapping against the wood of the floor. I've already told you Robert was one of our most trusted agents.

    Pudding and Mordecai exchanged a shocked look. The Governor busied himself brewing and serving tea.

    The Admiral continued. We'd sent him to Shadow Island to investigate rumors of some dark threat rising, something that could destroy the world as we know it. Ah, not to be melodramatic.

    My sister, Anja said. He never said outright, but I suspected as much.

    So where is he now, Admiral? Lucy demanded. Anja nodded in sharp agreement.
