About this ebook

A semi-retired Mafia Don tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter -- and deals with dirty business at work. Family comes first, but if you betray the 'Family'...

Rafe Velez is a fictional character, based on a real person alive today. One thing you can be sure of: you will never, ever guess who he actually is!

As a private investigator, Rafe dealt with decades of crime, divorce, death and depravity – and barely broke even. Pushing 50, he had a few extra pounds around the middle, a sprinkling of gray hair and a cynical view of life, relieved only by a deadpan sense of humor. All of that changed one day, thanks to a windfall he didn't expect.

Enter the world of the Rafe Velez Mysteries: intrigue, suspense, mystery, crime and a cast of characters taken from real life (and changed just enough to protect their identities – at least, until the statute of limitations expires). Enter into the mind of a man whose life is an open book – that should be suppressed!

Meet his friends, frenemies and frequent locations for his adventures:

• Detectives Toole and Williams, Robbery/Homicide's finest – said nobody, never.
• Harpo, a stray dog that wandered into his life and has a great sense of humor.
• Jean Smalls, the first woman in a long time who threatens to take his bachelor card.
• Keith Verdi, electrical contractor, who has other talents – and secrets.
• Momo Argento, the semi-retired Don of a crime family, who keeps a hand in the game.
• The Greasy Spoon restaurant, a real tribute to truth in advertising.
• The Shiny Penny, your soon-to-be-favorite dive bar.

...and a motley crew of clients and suspects. Expect surprises: not every client is on the right side of the law and not every suspect is guilty.

You won't always know what's going on in the minds of the supporting characters. You will always know exactly what Rafe is thinking – unless he's not thinking at all!

Discover The Rafe Velez Mysteries. No, really, go ahead! PG Rated -- no four letter words or explicit sex, but if you read between the lines...

    Chapter 1

Rafe Velez looked at his face in the mirror. Well, there's about 35 pounds less of the old man, he said to himself. Faithful adherence to an intermittent-fast diet and regular walks with his dog, Harpo helped a lot. Add to that the regular date-nights-at-home with his wife, Jean, and the picture of health that stared back at him in the mirror was complete.

Rafe called out to his wife, Honey, do we have anything on our social calendar this week?

Other than a visit with Bernice Byrum, not really, answered Jean.

Bernice Byrum was the widow across the street. She lost her husband Herbie to a vengeful brother, furious that his sibling wouldn't lend him money from a sizable settlement that the late Mr. Byrum received for a traumatic brain injury. She hadn't really recovered from the loss and appreciated the occasional visit from her neighbors.

Well, if I don't pick up a client in the next 24 hours, maybe we can get away for a few days in the Tropics. I need to work on my tan and show off my new body to all the young girls on vacation.

Peals of laughter erupted from the living room, where Jean was tending to some sewing. Hey, Tiger, lose some weight around your hat brim, not just the waistline! I like taking in your trousers. I don't want you going up in hat size!

My head is not swollen! I have bone structure there, now. Rafe walked into the living room, displaying his head like a model. See? Finely sculpted cheekbones, one chin instead of 1½, no bags under the eyes and my noble nose has lost the bulb at the end.

Yes, you're lovely to look at, delightful to hold – but don't kid yourself about the young girls. They want young life guards and soccer players.

Ooh, maybe we can go to the Philippines! Young girls there like the old guys, especially the ones from foreign lands. Tin-Tin says I'd be a '10' there. Well, at least a '9'.

Tin-Tin was the Velezes Filipina maid, a widowed OFW (Overseas Foreign Worker) who sent money home to her extended family. According to her, Filipina women appreciated age in a man, equating it with wisdom and constancy. Apparently, young Filipino males there were considered flighty and undependable.

They'd only want you for your money!

Not true! They'd want me for my exotic, American sexual prowess!

Uh, and where would I be while all this prowess was on display?

Lounging on the beach, displaying your beauty to all and sundry. No nude beaches, though!

And why not? Sauce for the goose, my soon-to-be-unfaithful husband!

Forget it, then. How about Jamaica, mon? Rafe did a fairly good Jamaican accent, especially under the influence of Red Stripe beer.

Just then, his office phone rang. "Saved by
