SEASON
CHAPTER 1
NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT
Malcolm Owens’s last class on Thursday seemed to drag on forever. Finally, he leaned over to his friend Hank Briggs and whispered, I think the clock is slow.
Hank snickered. It’s an hour, like every other class,
he said. Chill.
Malcolm groaned and put his head on his desk. At the front of the room, Mr. Plankstern rambled on about some event from forever ago.
Suddenly the teacher went quiet. Malcolm sat up and saw Mr. Plankstern staring at him.
Tired, Malcolm?
Mr. Plankstern asked.
Sorry, Mr. P,
Malcolm said. I’m just anxious to get to tryouts. They’re right after this.
Mr. Plankstern glanced at the clock. I know,
he said. But we still have four minutes left.
I know,
said Malcolm.
And what do I always say about this class?
Mr. Plankstern asked.
Malcolm sighed. If we don’t learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it,
he said. But even as he said it, all Malcolm could think about was baseball. Three more minutes.
* * *
I thought that bell would never ring,
Malcolm said as he and Hank hurried down the hall.
"Mr. P talked forever today, Hank agreed. He nodded down the hall, toward the locker-room entrance.
Hey, there’s Dalton."
Dalton Spinks, their other best friend, stood near the locker room. What’s the holdup?
he asked them. Didn’t Mr. P let you guys out a little early?
Did you get out early?
Hank asked Dalton as they went inside the locker room to get changed.
Dalton stopped at his locker. Ms. Jinkins said if I couldn’t sit still and pay attention, I might as well leave right then,
he explained. So I left.
Malcolm and Hank exchanged a glance. I think you missed her point, D,
Malcolm said. She was telling you to sit still and pay attention.
Dalton stared at him. Are you sure?
Pretty sure,
Malcolm said.
Dalton thought about it a minute. Oh, well,
he said, shrugging. At least I got to leave early.
The important thing,
Malcolm said, opening his locker, is that in less than two hours, I’ll have locked down first base and clean-up hitter.
You’re pretty confident,
Dalton said.
Malcolm shrugged. I had the best stats last year out of all the seventh graders,
he said. And I batted better than most of the eighth grader players. Coach won’t have a choice.
You think I’ll start at shortstop?
Hank asked.
Definitely,
Malcolm said. And Dalton will be our number-one pitcher.
I hope so,
Dalton said. I’d like to enter high school coming off a good season.
They grabbed their gear and went outside. There was already a big group gathered for tryouts.
Lots of competition,
Hank said.
Please,
Malcolm said. They’re a bunch of sixth-grade and seventh-grade scrubs.
Not all of them,
Dalton said. Some of them must be in our grade.
There are a few eighth graders right there,
Malcolm said, pointing to a group of boys in the crowd. You remember Steve and his friends?
Hank laughed. Sure,
he said. "Last year, they were benchwarmers. I think the biggest one got
