    Chapter 1

    As Usual

    My alarm went off at six thirty that Monday morning, like it always did on Monday mornings. I skipped the shower and headed downstairs.

    It was dark. I was the first one up, as usual, and I poured myself a bowl of Sugar Bombs by the light of the open refrigerator. I ate the cereal in front of the TV.

    By the time I was done, the sun was nearly up.

    The bus would get to the corner in a few minutes. I grabbed my baseball glove from the shelf by the front door, along with the baseball folded inside it, and walked outside.

    The bus stop was a block away. The weather was perfect: still nice and crisp that early, but the sun was still low. By that afternoon’s game, it would be in the low seventies, I could tell. Perfect weather for my first start of the season, pitching for the Ravens Pass Middle School baseball team.
