About this ebook

Max and Tyler have been paintball partners for a long time when they realize that something's strange at the paintball field. A new player in town, Ryan, has just started playing and winning. At first, Max chalks it up to beginner's luck. But then he starts to notice weird things about Ryan and his team: They always use the same yellow paintballs, for example, even though each team is supposed to get a new color each match. And the marks the paintballs leave behind don't match up to the number of times the players shoot. Can Max and Tyler figure out what's going on before the biggest tournament of the year?

Who is Jake Maddox? Athlete, author, world-traveler – or all three? He has surfed in Hawaii, scuba-dived in Australia, and climbed the mountains of Peru and Alaska. His books range from the most popular team sports to outdoor activities to survival adventures and even to auto racing. His exploits have inspired numerous writers to walk in his footsteps – literally! Each of his stories is stamped with teamwork, fair play, and a strong sense of self-worth and discipline. Always a team-player, Maddox realizes it takes more than one man (or woman) to create a book good enough for a young reader. Nothing. Max was free and clear. And now he was at Center Station, and that meant he was in control. The hidden shelter, which sat in the middle of the field, could give a person a view of almost any part of the field.

Max knew all about Center Station. After all, he had found it himself, and fixed it up with his friend Tyler. The field manager allowed them to build it right in the middle of the field.

Hidden by bushes and dug into the ground, Center Station was difficult to see. Some of the newer players didn’t even know that it existed.

It started when Max found what looked like an old fort dug between some bushes in the middle of the field. Two wood walls and part of a roof remained. Another side was all dirt; it appeared that the fort had been built into the side of a hill. The other side was open all the way to the field.

Max and Tyler hid there a few times during their paintball matches, but it wasn’t the best place. People coming in from the
