About this ebook

Heaven Is for Real Is Todd Burpo? By Sweetie Bee The Truth Shall Set You Free! The story of Todd Burpo’s son and his visit to heaven is known far and wide. It has even become a movie and an international sensation. Yet, the veracity of the story’s details have not been fully examined, not until now. Is the heart of the Burpos’ story a contradiction or inconsistent at best? Does each new version of the story question that before it? Did Todd Burpo use suggestive language to bring out a child’s natural imagination? Those are questions for you to ask, as you read the author's book. The author’s intention is not to shame the Burpo family in anyway. Instead, she seeks to bring light to a story, so that readers can make their own determination. The author, a well-versed and practicing Christian, uses her study of Forensic Psychology to demonstrate that even though the truth may seem more boring than fiction, it is still the truth. Is Heaven for Real? What is real, is not always as it appears...

***Special note on the commentary and criticism in this book. It is my opinion, based on the facts taken from the book Heaven Is for Real. I use multiple quotes from Todd Burpo, Colton Burpo, and Sonja Burpo to highlight possible discrepancies in the story. I will be utilizing quotes to write my commentary and critique. I will show you where I discovered errors in the story, and I will compare that information with selected interviews.

"We never misquoted Colton, ever!"—Todd Burpo.

    INTRODUCTION

For those of you who are not familiar with the story Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back, it is a book written by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent that has sold millions upon millions of copies and has also been adapted into a Hollywood movie.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the Burpo family and the Heavenly stories they have told over the years. Many naysayers have attempted to debunk Todd Burpo’s story of his son’s Heavenly adventure. However, none of them have proven their theory and have failed at their effort.

There are reasons for that, and this is one of them: taken from a 7 Hills Church TV interview. In the words of Todd Burpo, "When I wrote that book, my son and my god, ‘K? Those two people know if I told the truth or not, right? No one else does. . . ." (Church 7. H., 2012)

There have been negative reviews from both the secular and the religious world. These reviewers condemn Todd Burpo—who is a pastor, by the way—for allegedly creating his doctrine. Also, they condemn Todd for telling a story they claim does not match Bible scriptures in any way, shape, form, or fashion, according to these reviewers.

Someone left a review on a popular website for this very book you are reading now. They told me I should be ashamed of myself as a fellow Christian for critiquing the Burpo family.

Being a Christian does not mean you have to accept everything put in front of you. The Bible and the Word of God tell us to PROVE ALL THINGS.

    1 Thessalonians 5:21-Prove all things;

There is absolutely nothing wrong with stating the facts in any situation. The Bible is about the truth and not man’s opinion. That is the purpose and my motive for writing this book.

We no longer live in a world where we must just believe everything that we see on TV or the internet. We have so many resources at our fingertips so we can learn the truth for ourselves.

I am a Christian. I believe in God and his Son Jesus. I believe in the Holy Spirit and baptism. I believe in Heaven and I know it is for real. I am not evil because I highlight some questionable things in a story that is being sold as truth.

This criticism that I am writing is different from any other I have watched or read. It is a commentary or critique of the book Heaven Is for Real by the Burpos. It is not Bible-based in any way. It is not opinion-based either. It is based on accurate information discovered through the Burpos’ statements.

This review is based on a compilation of facts and quotes that have been presented in this story over the years. Taking lots of matching puzzle pieces and putting them together forms a complete picture. This allows you, the reader to view these facts from a different perspective or point of view.

Even though I attempt to keep my opinion about religion out of this book, it does not mean that God is still not first and foremost in my life.

Just because I am writing a review about Heaven Is for Real does not mean I do not like the Burpos, or I am trying to harm their reputation in any way. We are all God’s children.

Here is a brief recap for those of you who are not familiar with this story: The book Heaven Is for Real is about a father named Todd Burpo. He tells stories in the book that involves his son, Colton Burpo, going to Heaven. Colton was an almost-four-year-old boy when this all took place.

This adventure was said to have occurred when Colton had his first surgery to fix an appendix issue in March of 2003. The family waited approximately eight years to come out publicly with a book and share their story with the world.

Since then, I have found many ways this story appears to have been altered. I am going to show you some of the most possible major discrepancies in the Burpos’ Heavenly story.

I wrote this book for reasons I believe in, the most important is that we all deserve to be told the truth with evidence and not be misled in any way. It seems that it is our inherent American right. I want to show my children by example that they should stand up for what they believe in and not be afraid to expose the truth. It does not matter how many obstacles are in their way.

Below are some of the most interesting excerpts, just to warm you up. I feature much more of these, in full detail, later in this book. Whether or not you are a fan of the Burpo family, you may want to read this.

All the quotes in this book were taken from one of the Burpos’ books they have out now: Heaven Is for Real, Heaven Changes Everything, or Heaven Is for Real for Kids. These passages are also taken from interviews the Burpos have given about their books.

I am going to start by highlighting a few of the major features of this boy’s story. These are from what I view as the most talked-about points in the Burpos’ story Heaven Is for Real.

I will first list how the story was originally told in the initial book by the Burpos. Then I will show you how the Burpos changed the story—a lot of it—after it started becoming popular.

Throughout the book, I will list the Burpos’ quotes, show you how it appears that they changed the story, and then show you, my criticism.

    CHAPTER ONE

    One Too Many Discrepancies

Let us begin by highlighting some of the major possible discrepancies in the story.

Possible Discrepancy Number 1: The Miscarried Sister – taken from the book Heaven Is for Real and from a video interview I got from vimeo.com. It features Todd and Sonja Burpo with the Lead Pastor of Evergreen Community Church, Bothell, Philip McCallum. (Evergreen Church Bothell, 2012)

Todd Burpo: "I knew what my wife had to be feeling. Losing that baby was the most painful event of her life. We had explained it to Cassie; she was older (six years old). But we hadn’t told Colton, judging the topic a bit beyond a four-year old’s capacity to understand." (Burpo & Vincent, 2010, p. 94)

Sonja Burpo (Phil McCallum interview): "So when he (Colton) said that I had two sisters and a baby die in my tummy, um, we had never really talked about it with Cassie, and more less Colton, how do you tell a three- and four-year-old and a six-year-old you had a baby die in your tum . . . I mean how do you explain that . . . we got lots of critics and one of the things, well, he must have overheard that." (Evergreen Church Bothell, 2012)
