    Chapter 6

News of what happened up on the rigs always travelled fast, but when it involved a class full of kids, that news travelled even quicker. Turk was one of the first to arrive in the jump module after Caeden’s father and his crew arrived. Unfortunately for Mr. Kennedy, he hadn’t left the area yet. Jack Llewellyn didn’t give Joe Kennedy a chance to speak, let alone dodge the left hook. It wasn’t a sucker punch, though. To Turk, it looked like a reflex. And so was what Jack Llewellyn said through tears and gritted teeth as he stood over the collapsed, bleeding man.

You killed my son, you bastard. You killed my son. You left him up there and he died because of you. You sorry excuse of a man.

Jack’s fists were balled at his sides, his face trembling with contained rage. Two men Turk didn’t recognize were bracing themselves against him, but he showed no signs of physically attacking the man again.

You had no right taking those kids to that rig. No right, Joe. If you had thought for just one minute, you’d have realized the same. But, you had to go and do it anyway. Rub it in my face. And now it’s cost me the life of my son. My only son, at this, Jack collapsed to his knees.

    Cae… Jack’s voice trailed off.

The two men were no longer restraining him. They were trying to hold him up. Turk watched as Joe Kennedy cowered on the floor. He looked as if he might say something and thought better of it. Jack’s eyes told him that no matter what was said, it wouldn’t change what had happened. Turk shuddered.

Then it was true, he said to no one.

A hollow pit formed somewhere inside of him. His best friend was dead. Two red-clad security officers rounded the corner and stood, assessing the situation.

Joe Kennedy? one of them asked.

Get him out of here, one of the men responded.

Where are they taking him? Turk asked, casting a look in Mr. Kennedy’s direction.

He’s being kept overnight a couple of days for his own safety. Judge’ll want to figure out exactly what happened before laying out the blame. Now, do me a favor and get the hell out of here.

Turk took a last look at Jack Llewellyn. The man was a mess, but the last thing he needed right now was Turk grilling him over exactly what happened.

Turk made his way to the infirmary, but not quite knowing how he got there. His body seemed to be detached from his legs, but his feet knew where to go. Turk was there when his sister Anita awoke on a bed in the medical module. They had been here a few times when they were younger. A swallowed marble. Vaccinations and the like. A broken arm after falling off the couch in an unfortunate brother-sister wrestling match. The med mod dealt with all troubles great and small. To her left, Turk’s mother sat, a hand on her own.

    Hey sweetie.

    Mom? she said.

Her voice sounded scratchy to Turk, like she had a cold.

There was an accident on the rig, her mother said.

    I know. Where’s Cae?

They don’t know what happened to you, sweetie. Mr. Kennedy says Caeden brought you to the ship and you were injured.

Mom, where’s Cae? Turk watched as their mother went on, not quite listening to Anita.

    You’re alright, sweetheart.

Jack Llewellyn came back shortly after you did. I was in the bay when he came in with his crew. He was a mess, Turk said.

    Was he hurt?

Turk walked to his sister’s side, leaned in, and kissed her on the cheek. He knew that she could tell just by looking at him that all was not right. His voice caught as he spoke.

He kept his word to me, sis, Turk said. He promised me he’d take care of you, and he did. I guess I should have asked him to take care of himself.

Freddy, you’re scaring me, Anita said. Their mother spoke.

I’ve never seen a man so absolutely shattered. He wept like a little child, Turk said. He hiccupped a sob himself.

Anita realized that her mother had been crying all along. She heard her sob, and her own tears began to fall. Turk struggled to hold back. He grasped Anita’s hand firmly and breathed deeply, trying to steady the words as they came out. It was barely a whisper.

Cae’s dad was a mess because he lost his son.

Oh, Freddy. Oh no. Oh no, was all Anita could say, and she covered her face. Turk leaned down and held her as gently as he could. Their mother joined them and the family wept together.

    Chapter 7

When Caeden Llewelyn regained his sense of being, there was bright white light everywhere. He was lying down, he knew that much. Everything seemed white. He raised his right hand in front of his face. There were several scratches on the back of his hand and his palm. His wrist throbbed when he balled it into a fist. There was a dull pain in his left arm, but the meaning behind all of these ailments was still vague.

He had been on a field trip. A trip to the rig. The rig was going down. He had broken his arm in the doorway. Which doorway? He couldn’t remember. Anita! She had been aboard the jump ship. She was ok. He and his father had escaped. No. That wasn’t right. He had been pressed to the ceiling. His father…where was his father?

    Dad!

Caeden sat up too quickly. He saw stars and steadied his head against his hand. Blinking the stars away, he took stock of what surroundings he could see. He was sitting on a
