About this ebook

Larkin Day knew how to be a good cop. On the streets of New York, you had to pick your battles. She helped those she could and sometimes had to walk away from those who didn't want to save themselves. It was a harsh life, but she loved the city and thought she knew it all. What she didn’t expect was to be trapped on a rooftop with a snarling beast. It killed her partner, and now she was its next intended target. She didn’t dare open her eyes even when a deep kind voice told her she was safe. Larkin’s life was turned upside down. She was in a world where monsters were real. Werewolves existed and were hunting in New York.

Her savior showed up that same night to her apartment to let her know that she was still in danger and he was there to help her. Keaton Knight was built like a tree trunk and was as gorgeous as hell. The first kiss he gave her was only the beginning. Each touch made her burn hotter for the man who held two natures in one body. Now with him and his team, they hunted the things that tried to ravage their city, that took her partner. With danger at every turn, Larkin found something worth holding on to--Keaton Knight, a man who could become a wolf and who called her his mate.

    Chapter One

All units, we have a 10-13. Officer down; officer needs assistance.

The static-garbled voice came over her radio, letting Larkin know that help was on its way.

Get help here now, damn it! she shouted into her radio as she held her hand against the bleeding wound on her partner’s stomach.

How did this call go so wrong? It was just supposed to be a routine assessment of suspicious activity on a rooftop.

Injured officer on rooftop with multiple wounds. Fire and EMTs on the way.

The message came through on her radio, and she tried to reassure her partner lying in a pool of his own blood. Blast it, you keep breathing, you hear me? Help is coming!

Larkin Day had been a cop for seven years with the New York City Police Department. The NYPD had been her home since she was twenty-two. Her father was a cop and his father before him. It was the only life she had ever known. In her entire career on the force she had never seen anything like this. They’d heard a report that there was a suspicious character on a roof and responded. My ass, this was more than a fucking crack head! She and her partner made jokes about two lovers going at it before taking separate sides of the black tar rooftop. Instead, she heard his screams, and when she rushed to his side, he was already on the ground bleeding from so many places she had to pick the worst one and try to stop the blood flow.

It was no use. Larkin felt the sour taste of bile fill her esophagus and burn its way up into her mouth. She looked on as her frantic partner raised his head and stared down at his stomach, trying to push his intestines back in through the gaping wound. She had never seen anything like it in her life. He was missing chunks of flesh from his arms and legs. In some places the meat of his body was gone down to the bone with the cloth of his uniform bitten straight off as well. His stomach was ripped open, and all that came to her mind was, Oh, my God!

Officer Carmine Pitkin was a father of four and a veteran of the force for the past fifteen years. Now he lay on the hot rooftop, still smoldering from the summer sun beating down on its black asphalt covering and smelling like tar. His breath came out in short, wheezing pants. She had pulled his bloody hands away from his protruding bowel and did the only thing she could. She pushed the rosary beads he carried with him into his bloody hand, and he clutched them as a lifeline. His panicked prayers mixed with frantic questions as she held his other hand.

Hail Mary, full of grace, he muttered between clenched teeth. He looked at her with stricken eyes. Gone was the strong, six foot two man she knew as her partner for the last two years. Now he was a crying boy trying to cling to any kind of hope.

I’m going to be fine, aren’t I, Lark? His voice pleaded, and she had to swallow the lump in her throat.

Lark was the pet name he had given her when they were partnered up. It hurt like hell to know she would never hear it again.

The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women. Please don’t leave me, Lark. Don’t let me die alone!

You are not going to die! Larkin half shouted to him.

Even as she said it, she knew it was not the truth. Her hat had fallen off, revealing black hair pulled back into a tight bun. Sweat rolled down her forehead which was the color of a creamy mocha latte and mingled with the tears on her cheeks as she swiped at her face. She could hear the sirens in the distance coming closer. Help would soon be there. But the minutes it took would be too little too late. Carmine’s eyes had already begun to look glassy from the loss of blood, and his breath had slowed down to almost nothing. His fevered words of prayer stopped. She watched as his final, soft gasp of life was expelled from his body and he stared lifelessly into the New York night sky.

A painful sob left her throat as he died, but before she could give in to grieving for her fallen partner, she caught sight of movement out of the corner of her eye. It was only a shadow, but it made her react quickly. She reached for her gun that she had laid beside her knees when she knelt next to Carmine.

It was too late as she turned with her weapon raised. A large, heavy body hurtled into her and knocked her flat to the hot roof. Her breath left her lungs with a whoosh, and stars formed before her eyes. When they cleared, the sight she beheld was something that could only be conceived of in a nightmare. The fur against her body smelled fowl. Yellow eyes with a tint of red held such intense aggression and hatred. Its jaws were wide and filled with sharp, jagged teeth and saliva that dripped from its mouth. This was what had attacked Carmine, a
