I believe in Happily Ever After. I'm always looking for the silver lining and hope to find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I find life absolutely hysterical sometimes and try not to take myself too seriously. I also love watching sports- football, hockey, baseball. I read romance, but I also love a good mystery thriller. A Gift To Give - G. Whitman

    A GIFT TO GIVE

    CHAPTER 1

ALICIA WASN’T PLANNING on meeting anyone new. Hell, she had barely left her old relationship. What she really wanted was a new condo, and that was why she and her realtor, Shirley, were having lunch at Bebe’s Bistro.

Alicia loved Bebe’s. It had breakfast, lunch, and dinner, was affordable and within walking distance of her office. She knew Shirley didn’t mind meeting her here. Plus she had news of new condos up for sale.

So, leaving the old life behind and starting a new one with a new condo? Shirley never beat around the bush. It was a good thing she and Alicia had been friends for years. Honesty from anyone else might have hurt more.

Alicia remembered a conversation she had with Brad a few months ago. Things weren’t bad with Brad, they just weren’t going anywhere. They had a great time when they were together. They never discussed where they would be in the future. The time they did spend together was the key thing. Brad was in international banking. He was flying to London or Switzerland at least once a month. He never knew how long he’d be there. His time in New York was a little more predictable, so they were able to make plans. They did have a lot in common. Both were adventurous foodies. Trying various international cuisines was always interesting. Even if there was a cuisine they didn’t care for, they made sure they went back to try something else. If it wasn’t to their liking again, they would try another restaurant. Alicia and Brad wanted to make sure that it was the restaurant, and not necessarily the kind of food. He liked off- Broadway shows and riding mountain bikes in the country.

Just as they were connecting and into a comfortable groove, he was gone again. It was hard to keep the romance fires burning when he was an ocean away. For all Alicia knew, Brad could be one of those men who had two lives. Single in New York and had a wife and three kids in London. When Alicia half-jokingly threw the idea out there once, Brad laughed. A little too heartily, Alicia thought. He reminded her that she had been with him in London just two months before. The first three days he had worked eighteen hours a day while she explored on her own. For the next four days off they had together, they had a great time seeing the sites together. Alicia had hoped this was a turning point in the relationship, but sadly no. Brad continued working his crazy hours and never mentioned the future.

When Alicia did broach the subject with him, she knew there would be no future.

Let’s take our time, he said. Are you unhappy when we’re together?

When asked like that, Alicia could only answer No. I’m very happy when we’re together. It’s the time apart. That’s the problem.

You know what my job is like. Sometimes crazy hours, and sometimes I have real down time.

    I know.

We have things in common and enough things on our own we like to keep things interesting. Brad winked, then added, I don’t think sex is the issue.

No, Alicia thought. Sex was intense with Brad. He knew how to please, yet could be so tender and loving as well.

So let’s just keep the status quo and have a good time together.

They had left it at that and went to dinner. It was only after when Alicia got home that she began to evaluate their time together and conversation from the afternoon.

The only words she remembered were status quo. What the hell did that mean and how unromantic was that? Alicia had let herself think about that for a few days. She then decided it was time to move on.

She had almost changed her mind when Brad had come over and was in his intense, animal sex moods. She had been feeling a little needy herself. It was the best sex they had ever had. It had been hot, wet, and sweaty. After they had slept, they went for a walk. When they got back, Brad figured there was something on Alicia’s mind.

You’ve been quiet all afternoon. Is there something wrong?

Nothing wrong, just doing some thinking.

    Ohh... thinking.

    A look passed between them.

    I care about you, Brad...

Brad interrupted. The beginning of that sounds ominous.

Alicia took his hand. Just let me finish what I have to say. He nodded, and she continued. I care about you, and I love you. She paused to breathe. "I love the time we spend together. And as much as that’s all great, I realized I’m not in love with you. I’m looking for a future, and I don’t think you’re there yet. I think it’s time we take a break."

Brad knew she was right, but it didn’t hurt any less. My mind says you’re right. You want a future, and I need a little more time and space.

It had grown quiet between them. All Alicia seemed to hear were the honking taxis outside. Brad smiled a weak smile and leaned in to kiss her.

Let’s see where this time takes us, Alicia said in hushed tones.

Brad stood and headed for the door. We’ll see.

As the door closed behind him, they both knew they would never be together again.

...so this condo has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Alicia, have you heard anything I said?

Yea, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Go on.

And before that I said what?

You’re right. I have no idea. Just got lost in my own thoughts.

Brad? Shirley already knew the answer.

Yes, Brad. I know that it’s over and time to move on.

Okay, I have three different appointments on Saturday for three different condos.

Only three? Alicia knew her tone was sarcastic.

    "Three is enough for
