Here's what one reader wrote about this book:
Light and enjoyable read. Highlights some of the best of New Orleans. I am a recent traveler to New Orleans and enjoyed Louise Hathaway's recount of this romantic city.
Chapter One
A handsome man and a full-figured redhead were on their way to New Orleans to get married. The lovers, Don and Isabella, were taking the red-eye. Their plane touched down in New Orleans at 4:00 in the morning and there was a light rain falling as the taxi driver took them to the French Quarter. When they reached The Quarter
, they loved the Creole townhouses with their black wrought-iron railings and balconies with ferns hanging from the ceilings. The lights reflected in the rainy street added another layer of ambiance to the charm of the city. There wasn’t a tourist to be found, and the streets were deserted except for a teenage African American boy dressed like Gainsborough’s Blue Boy
who was playing a trumpet in the shelter of a doorway on Royal Street.
Don said, "Listen to him. I think he’s playing Stardust by Louis Armstrong."
How wonderful!
his fiancée answered.
They were staying on the outer edge of the French Quarter on Esplanade Avenue at The Lamothe House. It was built by a wealthy sugar cane planter in 1839 and had two Corinthian columns at its entrance. The entire building stood out in the neighborhood because it was painted pink. The taxi dropped them off and they rang the doorbell. A night clerk opened the door, looking like he’d just woken up. The couple immediately fell in love with the hotel once he let them inside. The first thing they noticed was the wonderful scent of roses from a large vase in the foyer. The clerk led them to the suite upstairs. Isabella said, It smells heavenly in here.
Yes, ma’am," the clerk answered.
Does this hotel have ghosts?
Why yes, I believe it does,
he told her. Some of our guests have reported seeing a woman in red walking the hallway looking for her baby who died.
Oh, you don’t believe that. Do you?
Don asked.
Who am I to say? This is New Orleans and there are many things here that you may find hard to believe.
He showed them to their rooms, then told them, Watch out for the red woman’s ghost. We haven’t seen her for a while. You never know when she’ll return.
So much for catching up on our sleep,
Isabella said under her breath.
You’ll be fine, honey,
the clerk answered. Just be sure to lock your door.
After he left and they were unpacking, Isabella told her husband, That guy kind of gives me the creeps.
He looked out of their upstairs’ window and saw the city starting to wake up. Come look,
he told her.
She walked over to where he was standing and looked out. How beautiful it is here!
They heard a calliope playing in the distance. That must be the riverboat. I can’t wait to take a ride on the Creole Queen,
she told him.
He put his arm around her and clearly had other plans. Let’s go to bed.
Chapter Two
Later that morning, they dressed and went to the dining room for breakfast. Other guests were sitting around a large antique table. The concierge introduced herself as Madeline and told them the names of the other guests. She said to the other diners, Don and Isabella are getting married at St. Louis Cathedral this week.
Do you have a date set?
the concierge asked Isabella.
The day after tomorrow.
How romantic!
a middle-aged woman with a heavy Southern accent told them. So, how did you two meet?
Don and Isabella looked at each other, wondering which one of them was going to speak first, until finally, Don said, "We
