About this ebook

A new war is dawning…

For millennia, the vampires walked the earth undetected, feasting on humans in keeping with ancient tradition.
In the Information Age, vampires realised they must be more careful to avoid detection. In the late 20th century they created the global Vampire Federation to police vampire activity, with special agents like Alex Bishop authorised to hunt down her own kind who break the laws. The old traditions are history.

But not all vampires bow down to Federation rule. When rebel vampire Gabriel Stone declares war against them, Alex and her team are plunged into danger.

Police inspector Joel Solomon, haunted by a secret terror of vampires, discovers a series of corpses left behind by Stone's bloodthirsty gang. As he and Alex are drawn together in an unlikely alliance between human and vampire, the race begins to destroy the evil Stone before his uprising tears their world apart.

Blah, nowhere near as good as his Ben Hope novels. Now I know why this has been on the to be read pile for so long.

I'm a little conflicted about this book. As a Scott Mariani fan, I enjoyed it. As a non-vampire fan, rather less so.This is typical Mariani fare - great fast-paced action, likeable characters, and plenty of twists. The vampire theme is not something I'm familiar with, but it did feel a little cliche and there were a couple of distasteful moments.

Average story. Nothing really new, or surprising.

Fast-paced, exciting thriller. I read this mostly because it was set partly in Oxford and Oxfordshire, which is local to me, and it's fun to check whether people are using the setting correctly or warping the geography for their own convenience. Also, always fun to read about the hero using a mini-JCB to demolish large parts of a mansion in the Oxfordshire countryside.

I got a bit fed up with how the human characters didn't last long - lots and lots of them were brought in as chumps for immediate chomping. A bit tacky I thought - could be more circumspect in the bloodbath. Otherwise, a fun, quick, but compelling read.

Hooked on books about Vampires. I am glad that I won this book on Librarything. So far this has to be my favorite book that has been awarded me. Really loved this book and wished that I read it sooner. I could see this book easily becoming a movie or a TV series. Can't wait for the other books in this series.

O K book if you like vampires. Unfortunately, I like very few and this would not be one of them. Rather stereotypical characters working for an organization that remind me strongly of "Get Smart" without the irony and humor,

In compliance with FTC guidelines, I won this book through the First-reads program on GoodreadsFirst off I feel horrible for not reading this sooner then I did, and there was really no excuse except I didn't want to. Now on to the review. Uprising is one of the, now rare, vampire novels that involve a lot of bloodshed and tough characters. It's not a totally original plot but after the amount of vampire romances I've read this was a nice change in pace. I did enjoy the main character Alex, she is a tough girl and can handle her own. I didn't really like Joel too much, he was kind of 'eh' to me. The romance that occurs is a bit cliche and in reality I didn't really care about it because I knew what would happen between them. The cross aspect is a pretty cool idea, as well as the vampire medication. It added a nice unique twist to the mix. Towards the end it does feel a bit like you've temporarily stepped into the Da Vinci Code though, but it doesn't last too long so it's not too distracting but at the same time I kind of wish it lasted longer. To be given a puzzle that consist of half written words and scribbles and to figure it out in the matter of about 6 or so pages is a little lack luster. I did like the short chapters because I ended reading a lot more then I normally would have as well. One thing I did find funny is the term "ubervampyre", the u does have an accent mark so it's not pronounced the same but I still laughed for a bit about it. Overall it's a well written story, that looks like it's going to take forever to read but actually pulls you further in as you move a long. I know there is suppose to be a sequel to this and I'm interested to see how Joel is in that one, also what the plot will be because the end of the book wraps things up pretty well.

The federation is under attack, and you do get some action but not as much as I was expecting. I did love the weapons and it was light on the romance. I am still not quite sure how I feel about vampires being out in the sunlight but am getting used to the idea after finishing this one. I guess it's how it's handled and this book with the combination of science and technology seemed ok..but I still have to warm up to the idea. I do think the writing was done well and the story dragged very little. I am also still a little undecided on the characters, some I enjoyed and some not so much, but overall I think they worked well together in this story. I know some people have said it contained a lot of action, but I really did find myself wanting more. The mystery of how to save mankind was very interesting and I think overall I did enjoy it more than I expected and am interested to see what more can come out of this story in later volumes.

Different take with vampires - massive bureaucracy with tools to kill vampires easily and to be able to be out in the sunlight. Some events happened too quickly to be realistic, but still interested in reading the upcoming novels in the series. Hopefully quality will improve.

Detective Joel Solomon remembers a traumatic experience when he was a child, where he killed his grandfather who had turned into a vampire. Of course, he dismissed this as a bad dream because vampires aren't real. Until a ritualistic murder happens that he has to investigate that shatters all of his doubt. Alex Bishop works for the Vampire Federation and is conducting her own investigation, but suspects that vampires that want to stay in the dark are rising up to destroy modern vampires. Can these two detectives work together to stop the force that could be the end of both their worlds? This was a really exciting vampire read. However, the characters seemed one dimensional and flat, making me lose interest in their plight. The plot and action really drive the book and there were some good scenes. The fact that I didn't really care about the good guys kind of dampened my enjoyment.

In the modern world, vampires remain hidden, but have created their own worldwide governing body that enforces the rules of vampire behavior, and distributes drugs that enable vampires to go out in the daylight and prevent humans from being turned by a vampire bite. A group of traditional vampires that just sees humans as a food source and wants to return vampire life to its old ways attacks the Federation with the intent of destroying it. Human police inspector Joel Solomon and Vampire Intelligence Agency agent Alex Bishop are thrown together to try and stop the uprising. The book is readable, but is nothing special. The whole mix of a thriller novel with vampires didn't really work for me. Some of the action scenes are decent, but vampires having gun battles with each other just removes most of the interest in using vampires in the first place. The story is predictable, with a romance between Joel and Alex that comes out of nowhere and an obvious ending. I might look for further volumes in the series, but they won't be a high priority.

Joel is a police detective, who as a very young boy witnessed his parents and grandfather viciously attacked by a vampire. His parents died instantly but his grandfather forced Joel to kill him because he too would be transformed. Joel has been haunted by those memories ever since. Alex is a top agent for the Vampire Intelligence Agency. She eliminates any threat to the secrecy of the VIA. She is also the executioner of any vampire who violates VIA rules. In the present, a case regarding a teenage boy who claims vampires are real has caught both Joel’s attention as well as the VIA’s. Alex is assigned to scope out this same case and see if there is any breach to the rules. She never thought to meet Joe, a handsome detective who reminds her of an old love that was torn from her side due to a fatal crime. She is now tempted to break the same rules that she is assigned to enforced.I was a little frightened by the cover, since to me it looked like it was going to be too gory. It isn’t your usual paranormal vampire novel either. It was a little hard for me to get completely connected because I was overwhelmed by so many different times, places and point of views. It was hard to keep the timeline of the story straight. I found myself turning the page back to check the references/notes at the beginning of the chapters. It wasn’t until I was halfway through the book that I found myself finally connecting to the story.

While Uprising: Vampire Federation was faced paced and filled with action it just wasn't my kind of book. Not much held my attention, I didn't connect with the characters and I found the plot to be rather predictable like others have mentioned. This is definitely the kind of book for someone looking for a different aspect of an Urban Fantasy Vampire thriller.

The premise: vampires walk among us every day, popping pills to keep the sun from frying them, kept in line policed by the Federation, a coalition of vampires devoted to making sure humans stay oblivious. Are they "good"? All things being relative, they're certainly the lesser of two evils.Weighing in on the evil side of the scale are the Trads, traditionalists who want to see the world returned to the bad old days when vampires kept humans like sheep (and who apparently subscribe to all the old truisms about vampires, cloaks, slinky white silk dresses, etc.). With spies and informers placed high in the Federations ranks, the Trads are plotting a bloody takeover - only slightly hampered by the fact that they refuse to pop pills and must therefore work through half-turned human ghouls for any daytime deviousness. What I liked? For a relatively hefty book, it read very quickly. But... the plot's predictable, and the characters are straight out of central casting - Angelina Jolie would be perfect as Alex Bishop with Daniel Craig or some similarly broody Englishman as Joel Solomon - it's by no means terrible, but you won't find any new ground here.

A horrible experience as a youth left Joel Solomon with a unique perspective when it came to claims of vampire ritual killings in the area. As a Detective Inspector, he logically thought that the teen, Declan Maddon was on drugs or alcohol and had imagined the Halloween night death. But, as the boy that watched his own parents attacked by one, Joel had a sense that Dec was telling the truth. As one of the Vampire Intelligence Agency’s (VIA) top field agents, Alex Bishop’s job included policing other vampires and making sure that the humans never suspected vampire existence. Hearing the story that Dec was telling the police brought her face to face with Joel and even though that first encounter didn‘t amount to much, there was something about him and she knew they would meet again. Taking different routes, Alex and Joel end up being on the same path … to stop the uprising of the vampire traditionalists. Book 1 ….. Took an extremely long time to get into the story of the Uprising. Some of it could be attributed to it being the first book of a new series and wanting the back story told. To some point it was predictable, nothing like posting forbidden laws at the beginning of a story to ensure that some if not all will be broken by the main characters by the end of the story. I did struggle to get into it at first, there was so many characters and keeping them straight at first was difficult, and then to find most of the characters that had been introduced ended up dying was a bit frustrating. Near the middle of the book though, I did find myself not wanting to put it down, the main characters had been reoccurring enough that I finally got into the actual story and learned to overlook the introductions of the expendable characters. Turns out that I really liked both Joel and Alex. I liked the way it ended - emotionally, I will probably seek out the next book after it becomes available, if for not other reason than to see the reaction of the characters to the ending action of one of them.

I loved the premise of this book: the existence of vampires, a secret federation (of vampires) which ensures that the vamps don't kill humans, a gruesome murder, a dogged detective trying to solve the murder, and the vampire who helps him. I was interested just reading the book jacket! I especially enjoyed the beginning of the book - the opening scenes are atmospheric, spooky, riveting. I really wanted to like the book....but found the characters too formulaic. They seemed like caricatures of characters and thus I could not empathize with them, as much as I tried. Perhaps the second book in the series will flesh them out a bit. I hope so because I greatly enjoyed the world that McCabe has built and would like to learn more.

Alex Bishop is an agent of the Vampire Intelligence Agency. She is not quite alive either. Her agency fights vampires that kill humans or turns them. The VIA believes that vampires should feed on humans, but should not kill them. They have cool weapons, like Nesferol, a drug that causes vampires to explode if it even touches their skin, a drug that lets them walk in sunlight, and drugs that keep the blood lust down. There are a group of rogue vampires killing humans and trying to kill the agents of the VIA.Detective Joel Solomon has tried his entire life not to believe in vampires. As a child he saw his parents killed by vampires and his beloved Grandfather turned into one. Therapists told him it was a nightmare and vampires aren’t real. Now he has met Alex Bishop and seen things that he can’t explain away. Can he and Alex stop these sadistic vampires before they take over the world? I have to admit that this book did not hook me right away. It took many pages before I became interested and wanted to see how things would turn out. I did not relate to the characters as much as I would like, but the story did draw me in more as the story unfolded. I think that this is the first book by this novelist so I would like to read more to see how his writing grows.

I don't have anything bad to say about this book, but I also find it hard to think of many things that stood out for me. Nevertheless, I still thought it was a good read. Uprising mostly follows two main characters, Detective Inspector Joel Solomon, and Agent Alex Bishop of the VIA. The parts featuring the two main characters are what make the book as good as it was, while the parts featuring the other characters tended to drag it down some for me. The version of vampire lore within this novel is a bit deeper than you will find in most, which also helps to make it more interesting. The rapid change of scenery every 3 pages or so can be a bit unnerving but you get used to it. By the end of the novel I was moderately pleased. It had its good and bad parts, but the good outnumbered the bad.
