Prologue One: Fergie's Story
Fergie lay next to the President, hoping his body heat would help the man recover from the fever he seemed to be going through. Fergie hated himself for not taking his medical classes more seriously in school.
He peered around the rock he had dragged the President behind and the passage was clear. The glowing moss cast weird colored shadows everywhere, but nothing seemed to be lurking there, which was no guarantee there wasn't. No guarantees in this brave underground world he decided a long time ago when his fellow team members began disappearing or were killed by the odd underground Insectoids that seemed to live in these regions of the tunnel.
How in the world had anyone made it safely all the way to this damned so-called mystical place of Shamballa, he had no idea. He cursed the fools who had believed it would be easy, knowing at the time he did it, that no one forced him to come. It had been a last minute act of defiance against the man he was now stuck with protecting. A man who hated him with every fiber of his being.
What irony!
He closed his eyes, hoping to catch a little shuteye, but immediately his stomach began to growl like a hungry tiger. Not softly, but loudly. He almost sat up, but then the President stirred, groaning in his sleep. He hunched over and reached for the canteen, he had filled from some moisture that ran down one of the walls. He had no idea if it was sanitary or not, it might kill the both of them with all the luck they'd had lately... none of it good.
He dribbled some of the liquid between the President's lips and the man quietened. The water seemed to have an almost narcotic effect he thought as he took a hit too. It tasted very minerally, like the water you bought in health food stores with all the junk thrown in for your health, but with a slight off taste like something metallic he couldn't place.
He put the canteen down and felt for the knife beside him. He kept it handy. He had run out of ammo a long time ago. He still had his weapon, but it was out of reach and didn't matter anyway, because it was no good now for anything but a stupid club which would probably only make those Insectoid monsters laugh. If they could laugh.
He pondered the creatures. They were almost all of them over seven feet tall and had these hides about them that were like bullet proof armor.
His reverie was shattered by the sound of something loud approaching, something big, very, very big and slithering like a gigantic snake.
Oh crap!
He thought to himself. Here we go again. Killing time for the bogey men!
He rolled over and raised the knife to a protective position. I may die down in this God forsaken hive of tunnels and hideous beasts, but I won't die alone! He swore to himself!
I wonder what it feels like to be swallowed up alive. Were his last thoughts before the nightmare began.
Prologue Two: Doctor Sway's Story
Miles and Aaron in the lead of the team were discussing tactics that might lead them back to their lost members. They were readying their last robot; a special one that could catalogue and send back maps of all the tunnels it went through. It was a very advanced tech and had been rescued from Area 51 just after the Big One.
Miles had snuck it out, despite orders to the contrary. To leave it. It was special technology that raised the hair on the back of his neck. Officially, it was best NASA technology; unofficially it was from Roswell, the incident that never happened officially, but unofficially had scared the hell out of both Congress and President Eisenhower is causing them to immediately fund and hide an enormous Black Program that sucked huge sums out of the national budget every year so that the best of the best could reverse engineer the advanced tech that had been found in that crash
