Author’s Preface
Successful people think differently than other people. The consistent success they achieve and maintain is a reflection of the way they have learned to think about life and how it works, about what they deserve, about what they’re capable of, about the laws (most people are unaware of but all are subject to, just like the law of gravity) that govern the way things happen within and around us, and about what they want.
Successful people (the Big Dogs) develop, cultivate, and nurture healthy relationships with others, with themselves (we call that self-esteem and self-respect), with money, and with the concept and realm of possibility. These people who others may envy are careful to monitor their mind chatter, to look for the possibilities in every situation, and to expect success.
You may be thinking that these people have an easier time thinking in ways that help ensure success; after all, they have a track record of success, lots of money to fund success, a team of people to help create success. And that may all be true. However, there was a time when each of these Big Dogs was not living in the lap of success. There are countless stories of people whose success is now dazzling, but who have lived through numerous tragedies, poverty, even homelessness. Their success was not ready-made, not guaranteed because they were born to it. Success became inevitable when they decided to become everything they were intended to be, when they chose to define success for themselves and then to pursue it with an unwavering commitment.
The very good news is that the same mindset that has been at the foundation of the success of these Big Dogs is available to all of us. You can learn to think, make choices, respond to life’s ups and downs, and choreograph your own success just like those whose lives seem charmed, even magical. There is nothing beyond your grasp as long as you have the blueprint, the recipe that has allowed countless others to create successful lives. This book offers you that blueprint.
Your mind is the most powerful engine in all of life, an engine that can take you wherever you want to go. Use it wisely.
Thinking Like the Big Dogs
The Fine Art of Getting Out of Your Own Way
and Getting What You Want
What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?
This question is an essential part of exploring what it takes to get what you want in life. It may seem whimsical, even a waste of time to consider, as failure has always been an option, a consistent possibility in anything you have attempted and even achieved. Most people have grown up knowing that they could always, at any moment and in any situation, fail miserably and experience the humiliation, discouragement, and shame that accompany failure. But how many learned, as children, that success is as great a possibility as failure? Did you grow up aware that you are as likely to succeed as to fail? Or was failure the anticipated result of your choices and efforts?
The secret truth (secret only because so few have taken time to recognize it) is that everything is possible for you. This may seem a radical kind of statement, especially as you survey your own life and the disappointments that may have been a major part of your experience. But, in reality, life is not a matter of finding the few things that might be possible and then trying very, very hard to make them happen; rather, life offers every individual the opportunity to choose (from among virtually unlimited possibilities) the options that serve him/her best. The difficulty for most of us is that we learn to expect limitation and failure, and
