      A Word to Directors and Ministers of Music

      Foreword

      Beginning in my college years and extending through my time with the Billy Graham organization, I have had the God-given opportunity to express my heartfelt love of music. I have used my trombone, sung duets, and led large crusade choirs, and during every session, no matter the size or chosen music, it was essential that I prepare my heart to express joy and direct with integrity and skill, ever mindful that God is the audience. Throughout this long tenure, I have found a musical expression that describes my life: gioioso!

      It should be no surprise that joy is the essence of the Christian life. God brought to us, through his Son, the gospel of great joy. And Scripture is replete with illustrations of musicians and their role in leading armies or announcing Christ’s spectacular birth.

      In this book you will find many musical terms, such as gioioso, that possess spiritual significance. And this is understandable, because, as Jack Coleman writes, God is harmony and balance. He is the source of every melodic line and rhythm. John Wesley expressed how central God was to his own compositional work when he wrote the following beside one of his hymns: Oh let me undivided be, to watch and work and wait for Thee.

      May the same be true of us, in music and in life.

      Preface

      How many times have I looked at a musical term on a score and wished that I had some immediate in-depth information on its definition and use? I cannot count the number. It has been frustrating and sometimes embarrassing.

      So, I thought I would choose fifty-two of the most used musical terms, one for each week of the year—if that has any special significance— and write about them. It has been very stimulating to see these terms from a new perspective and to realize that each one could be considered in a dimension of spiritual application.

      In this application, one factor above all others should remain preeminent in our thinking: the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. For he is harmony and balance. He is the source of every melodic line and rhythm. He is music in all its depth and multifaceted character.

      May the crescendos and diminuendos of your life experience be controlled by the Lord and may his promised victories be yours.
