    Latte Love - Doug Nuenke

    MORE THAN A TABLE KNIFE

THE CUT WAS DEEP. The gushing blood was unnerving. She fell unconscious in the apartment of two men she hardly knew. The ambulance arrived on the scene, but the details were unclear. When her husband arrived things got interesting. Jumping to conclusions, his first response was to strike out against the two apparent assailants who stood over his wounded wife.

Sound like a scene from the TV shows 24 or Law and Order? Well, this event occurred just months after Pam and I had been married. We were managing an apartment building near downtown Denver. I had been at a breakfast appointment. I arrived back to the apartments to find an ambulance in the parking lot and Pam just regaining consciousness in the apartment of some new neighbors, two men who lived next door to us. She had been preparing a bagel for breakfast and, using one of our brand-new (and sharp) table knives, she had cut deeply into her finger. She got scared and went next door for help, only to pass out at the sight of her own gushing blood. The frightened men called the ambulance. I arrived home to find this perplexing scene, which was soon explained to my satisfaction.

Table knives are not the best utensils for cutting bagels. Our wedding gifts had not included the big knife set with a bagel knife or a serrated bread knife. These instruments of choice might have averted the morning drama.

In recent years, we have interacted with many everyday men and women who desire to see God use them in the lives of people who have yet to experience Jesus. It has become clear to us that many people feel unequipped and discouraged in their attempts to be used by God in the advancement of the Gospel. Maybe you’ve been trained to give a Gospel presentation or you have defaulted to inviting people to church or some other Christian event. Maybe you, like many of my friends, feel that you’ve been given one utensil — a table knife — and have been asked to do the job. Maybe you are not a gifted teacher or don’t feel like presentations would work with your friends. You’ve come to realize that these instruments alone are inadequate and at times inappropriate, like cutting someone’s hair with a gas-powered lawn trimmer. You long to learn and try out other ways to use your gifts and personal uniqueness in order to see the fragrance of the kingdom waft into the lives of those around you.

The stories and thoughts on the following pages are meant to bring hope and help to people who long to see their friends move toward Jesus. Our times and culture are different from first-century Palestine, but one thing is still true: We are surrounded by distressed and helpless people who are living life without a roadmap, men and women who are without God and without hope in our generation. And thankfully, something else is true and timeless: The Good News of the kingdom still brings hope and sets people
