    Introduction

Considering his background, he was doing pretty well, but Mark’s parents were wondering how long it would take his old habits to die. It had been a year since they adopted him. Hadn’t the love they showered on him, the structure they carefully established, and the compassion they poured into him erased his earlier instincts? No, apparently not. He still showed far more signs of his former life than they had expected.

Mark had spent his first five years in a hopelessly dysfunctional family, and it showed. He still acted as though he needed to protect himself, to guard his interests carefully in case no one else did. In spite of all the unconditional love his new family had shown him, he still behaved like someone trying to prove himself. His defensiveness, a legacy of the abuse he once received, showed up almost every time his parents gently tried to correct him. And he still approached every relationship tentatively, always wary of the friendship of others. Though his new family provided a loving, caring environment, experience had failed to teach him that loving and caring could be real. He would learn, but it would take a lot of time.

That’s true for all of us. Regardless of how we came to believe in Jesus and join his family, our backgrounds affect us. Until we are completely immersed in the gospel and it is deeply ingrained in us—a lifelong process—we have a tendency to fall back into our old perceptions and revert to our old ways. Whatever shaped our past rises up in an attempt to drag us back to where we came from. We have to choose not to let it.

Life in the kingdom of God is like leaving one culture and adopting a new one. There’s some degree of culture shock, and the adaptation takes time. Though we press ahead toward a new way of life, the old way—our former worldview, relationship patterns, and habits—frequently reminds us of where we’ve been and causes us to wonder if we can ever change. We can, and in our better moments we know that. But we need reminders that the kingdom we came into is different than the world we have lived in.

That’s essentially what Philippians is: a reminder of what kingdom life is all about. Paul hasn’t seen the believers in Philippi in several years, and though they are a relatively problem-free church, they are letting old ways seep back into their fellowship. So the apostle reminds them of the selflessness they once learned from Jesus and practiced toward each other, and he calls to mind the joy that was once so familiar to them. They are citizens of another kingdom now, he tells them. The culture of that kingdom is different than the culture of
