Beautiful Battlefields Bible Study - Bo Stern

    Meeting Goliath

    Beautiful Battlefields: Week One

    Week One

    David & Goliath

We are about to embark upon a journey into one of the most exciting chapters in all of literature. While moving through the pages of this grand and gory adventure, try to read it like you don’t already know what’s going to happen. I strongly recommend reading it with an exciting movie soundtrack playing in the background (my favorite is Chronicles of Narnia—it’s just epic.) Sometimes, I’ll suggest you read a passage out loud so you can get the full weight of the words. It’s going to be a wild ride.

    Buckle up!

    Week One Listening Guide

1 Samuel 18:5, 7 And David went out wherever Saul sent him, and he prospered and behaved himself wisely; and Saul set him over the men of war. And it was satisfactory both to the people and to Saul’s servants. . . . and the women sang Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands. . . .

1 Samuel 18:8 And Saul was very angry, for the saying displeased him; and he said, they have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed only thousands . . . what more can he have but the kingdom?

1 Samuel 18:17 Saul said to David, here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage; only serve me bravely and fight the battles of the Lord. For Saul said to himself, I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!

1 Samuel 18:30 Then the Philistine princes came out to battle, and when they did so, David had more success and behaved himself more wisely than all Saul’s servants, so that his name was very dear and highly esteemed.

There are some good things that God can only accomplish through battle.

God is built for battle. He uses each one to accomplish something beautiful in us.

Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

    Day One: Naming Giants

    Read 1 Samuel 17:1-11

Read the description of Goliath out loud—it’s enough to send an army of grown men running for their mommies. List out some of the things that made Goliath such a formidable opponent:

As we step into this study with fresh eyes and a fresh heart to understand the battles that we face, list anything in your life that you see as an opponent to your faith, strength, and happiness. I believe that the giants in our lives can be really big and overwhelming, but they can also be
