MASON STREET
On a cool evening in June I was sitting in my car on Mason Street after getting off work listening to a soft rock station on my car radio. It was too early to go inside just to sit in the boredom of my lonely room. I had found a job thirty miles from my home town and decided to look for a place near my new job. I found a nice boarding house that was not too far from where I worked and rented a room.
Enjoying the cool evening breeze and the music, I just happened to glance into my rear view mirror and saw an Angel walking down the street. She was barely five feet tall, small, curvaceous and absolutely beautiful. I thought to myself, I’ve got to get to know this beautiful girl. By the time she drew even with my car I had worked up the nerve to say hi there
to her through the open window.
She stopped and looked to see if she knew me. She didn’t but for some reason she stopped, smiled and said hi
back to me.
In a brief conversation I told her, I’m new here in Greenville and under a temporary contract with a company out of Wisconsin installing new equipment at the Judson plant nearby. We should be finished in about three months and I’ll be living at the boarding house until then.
Somewhat bluntly she asked, Are you married?
No,
I replied, Are you?
No,
she answered.
Well,
she said, I live just down the street at number three Furman so I guess we’ll be running into each other from time to time.
I hope so,
I replied.
Are you seeing anyone?
she asked.
Not really. I’ve met a couple girls in the neighborhood since I’ve been here but no one of any particular interest.
I’ve lived here for about three years and have dated a few of the guys but no serious relationships have developed,
she said.
Our conversation was nice and polite but far too short for me. I wanted to spend a lot more time with this beautiful Angel but finally, after an I’ll be seeing you around,
we parted company.
As I watched this gorgeous Angel walking on down the street away from my car I was totally enthralled with her curvaceous beauty and the grace of her steps as she walked.
I desperately wanted to see her again. I had known several nice girls but the thought of love at first sight had never entered my mind. This time I was definitely stricken with something; an emotion for this beautiful young girl that I definitely thought might just be love.
Several days passed without her taking her walk, at least not while I was parked outside my boarding house. Those were very disappointing days.
One evening Robert, an acquaintance I had made in the neighborhood, stopped by and asks me about going on a double date. I know a girl I can fix you up with,
he remarked, How about Saturday night?
I reluctantly agreed but my mind was still on my Angel.
When Saturday came, he got into my car and explained, This is the bad news. The girl I asked to be your date couldn’t make it but my date is waiting for us now.
