About this ebook

Machines make faster, better, more accurate decisions than humans. They deal with facts, not emotions and they never disobey. Or do they? When Dr. Lewis Glen set out to create Guardian - a decision making supercomputer, he had all the best intentions. Unfortunately as the government takes over the project, things quickly get out of hand. On top of it all there is a growing movement protesting against Guardian, whatever his use. Enabled by the National Security Agency and a results oriented general, Doctor Glen finds that he has Crossed the Rubicon.

Background: It was January 49 BC, Caesar was staying in the northern Italian city of Ravenna and he had a decision to make. Either he acquiesced to the Senate's command or he moved southward to confront Pompey and plunge the Roman Republic into a bloody civil war. An ancient Roman law forbade any general from crossing the Rubicon River and entering Italy proper with a standing army. To do so was treason. This tiny stream would reveal Caesar's intentions. The idiom "Crossing the Rubicon" means to pass a point of no return.

    PROLOGUE

It has been said by the greatest minds of our time:

    "Every second we are tasked to make decisions that may send us careening down a new path;

With poor decisions, that outcome would then be catastrophic."

Washington DC, Secret Senate Intelligence Oversight Meeting

The Senator from Virginia lifts his gaze straight at me. He stares through the thick glasses, while his chubby fingers shuffle through the papers in front of him. So unprepared, no wonder these hearings last this long. I catch a few whispers behind my back, the closest commenting on the amount of medals pinned to my uniform.

General Buck, the Senator finally says my name and pauses still fumbling through the papers. You have been invited here today to tell us, in your own words, what happened to the Guardian Project.

I don't have to get up from my chair. Still, I straighten up rather than bend down to the microphone placed on a stand on the desk in front of me. You don't need a microphone after years as a commanding officer. I face the group of men that forms the committee, including the Senator, all sat behind a slightly raised, green cloth covered table. I glance over their names carved onto small golden plaques in front of them.

If you remember, I pause for effect waiting for the room to fall silent before continuing. "As was discussed before the break, five years ago we have been indirectly funding Dr. Louis Glen from Glen Computers through several university and government grants. At that point of time he was looking for investors for his project. The Guardian project could protect the United States, and given the right resources even anticipate and prevent any and all terrorist attacks."

The last words provoke whispers again. The Senator just nods for me to go on.

"Dr. Glen, the inventor of the Guardian, wrote in his research paper: 'Decisions based on inaccurate facts will destroy us all. This is why we must have all the facts before making any decision.' He made it his motto and built the project around this concept. When the Guardian became more than just a theory, we knew we found exactly what the United States Congress was seeking."

I make a point to look at a Congressman two seats down from the Senator.

The system was not perfected at the time. Dr. Glen needed time and more funds to deal with a few glitches, and since we did not want him to go into the private sector with the project a decision was made to step in more openly. Dark Star was created - a fully NSA controlled company that devoted its efforts to security, maintenance and computer operations. I am not completely aware of Dark Star's origins or the exact funding details, but as you can see in the document CTGX-128722a, I recite from memory without even glancing at the neat stack of papers in front of me, the project has been fully and continuously funded by the US government from the start.

Yes, that is one of the reasons we are here, General. The Senator interrupts me. The huge amounts of money-

I will get to that Senator. I cut him off and clench my fist for a brief moment. You asked what happened to the project, and answering that question first will help everyone here understand the scope of the operation and the reasons behind the continuous funding.

    CHAPTER 1 – Brain Trust

    Silicon Valley, Glen Computers office

Any luck with that issue, Doc? I almost fall of the chair at the sound of Mickey's voice behind me. Sorry, didn't mean to startle, Just brought your afternoon coffee.

The intern squeezes between the piles and stacks of computers filling up the room to reach my desk. His every step is accompanied by the jingling and rattling sound of all the junk stuffed into his cargo pants' pockets. Screwdrivers, connectors, keys, change, and all sorts of bits and pieces. His long dreadlocks hang loose and swing back and forth as he bends down to place a steaming hot cup on my desk. Have I been here all day already? I glance at my watch and then at the kid.

Thank you, Mickey. I rub my neck and reach out for the much needed coffee. On time as always.

His large grin widens even further at the words. Sometimes I worry if he's actually smoking something on the job since that smile never leaves his face. I shake my head.

We're still struggling with the main problem. Fetch Lisa for me please, we'll need to order more parts.

    On it, Doc.

I turn back to my desk and the towering wall of monitors on and around it. Several simulations are running, but a few screens have gone blank. Again.

    "You're meant to
