About the Author
The Princess of the Forest
A Foul Deed
Once upon a time, there lived in the Kingdom of Daria a little girl named Neleta. She was two years old. She never knew her mother as her mother died giving birth to her. Nell, as she was called, was being brought up by her father Rikardo in a very small cottage in the Royal City of Daria.
Rikardo was a fine horseman and was in charge of the stable at the Royal Palace. He was well liked by King Odeen and Queen Laisa. Their four-year-old son Damon just adored Rikardo. Prince Damon especially loved their daily fun together horse riding. Rikardo would put the Prince in the saddle and mount behind him. He would let Damon place his two hands on the reins while he held them and off they would go, riding over the fields and into the forest.
With the death of his wife Viveca, Rikardo was able to persuade his neighbor, a middle-aged housewife, to take care of Nell during the day. Nell was very happy. When her father came home after work, he would rush to her, lift her and throw her in the air, catch and kiss her. He would open his knapsack and gave her cakes he brought from the Palace's kitchen.
Life was great for Nell and Rikardo. But, as so often happens in life, things change and in Nell's case, they changed forever.
Nell's babysitter and her family decided to move to another city. Rikardo tried several other families but could not find another babysitter.
Rikardo grew sad. He dearly loved Nell but he could not give up his job to take care of her himself. The money he earned from it took care of all of their needs. He thought long and hard about it and decided that the only way out for him was to get married again. He had someone in mind, a kitchen maid in the Palace. She gave him the cakes to take home for Nell. She never saw Nell but from the questions she asked, he felt that she liked Nell and would make her a good stepmother.
The next day, he asked Dora the maid to marry him. Dora, filled with happiness, readily said yes. They also agreed that after the wedding, Dora would stay at home and take good care of little Nell.
That evening, Rikardo quietly told the babysitter the good news. The babysitter was overjoyed. I can now hurry up with our plans to leave for I so much want to be near to my own family,
she said.
Ricardo took Nell home and gave her the goodies sent by Dora. He put her to sit in a chair and asked her, Would you like a mommy to take care of you, love you, make nice things for you to eat, take you out every day and play with you?
Nell did not answer. She only could say a few words like dada, no, yes and okay.
Come on Nell, say yes. Dada wants you to say yes. It would make Dada very happy. Please, please say yes for Dada and I will give you pie,
pleaded Rikardo, and held out a small meat pie to her.
With a burst of laughter, Nell shouted Yes
and snatched the pie from her father's hand. Rikardo lifted her in his arms, hugged her and said over and over again Thank you, thank you.
The wedding was held at the Royal Palace by the wish of the King and Queen. They were very pleased with the work of Rikardo and Dora and wanted to reward them with a beautiful and grand wedding.
Nell wore a beautiful blue dress to the wedding and during the reception she met the King and Queen. She also met Prince Damon who took her hand and kissed it, much to the delight of all.
During the early months with her stepmother, Nell enjoyed it very much. Dora had time for her and her needs, unlike her former babysitter who had her own children to take care of as well.
After a while, however, Nell had the feeling that her stepmother was growing to like her less and less. She also noticed a change in her father. When her father came home from work now, her stepmother insisted that Nell should just kiss him and go to her room and to bed. Nell always felt sad when it happened.
As Rikardo's love for Dora grew, his attention to Nell became less and less.
Then Dora became pregnant and her dislike for Nell grew worse but she always pretended to be nice to her when Rikardo was present.
Time passed quickly and Dora gave birth to a baby girl. The baby, named Rena, became the pride and joy of her father and mother. Neleta became more and more neglected. During the day, Dora spent all her time with baby Rena. She hated Nell and gave her little to eat.
One day, Rena was crying and Nell went to the bed and held her hand. When Dora came into the room and saw her holding Rena’s hand, she pulled Nell’s hand away and smacked her on her back. Nell fell to the ground in tears.
"Who told you to touch Rena? How dare you hold her hand? Never do it again. Now go to your room and no
