Cold Hard Crush - Carter Lee King

    Chapter One

There was very little that Crush hadn't seen in the last few years, and the alligator he was currently watching was no exception. It moved languidly in the water, making small ripples that disturbed the late evening reflections. Spanish moss seemed to waver and fade, then come back again, like an undecided ghost. He kind of envied the alligator, really. They were solitary animals, cool under threat but deadly when provoked.

Just like Crush. Why else would he be hiding out in the bayou and trying to lay so low? He grunted, amused at the thought, just as the back door opened and slammed. Crush grimaced at the noise and turned to face Stony, his bartender. What? And quit slamming the door.

The pounding beat from the music inside the bar behind him beat at his ears and annoyed him. Maybe it was time to give the place up, but then what would he do with himself? Roll over and die?

Stony chubby face looked worried. Getting rowdy inside. Might need your help.

Then he disappeared back into the smoke filled bar before Crush could answer.

Crush sighed and flexed his shoulders. He'd been sitting out here for too long anyway, and he needed to get back in there before somebody got hurt and sued him. He looked longingly at the old sun-washed deck behind him. It had become Crush's favorite place.

It was mostly known for its Mayor, who had famously, according to CNN, told his police force that they could shoot gays on sight. It was also known for the antics of the mayor's son Arlie, who was currently poking one of Crush's regulars with a pool cue and trying to start a fight. He walked directly to where they stood, weaving in and out of people who were willing to watch but not interfere.

Old Burl was keeping his cool nicely for the moment, Crush noted as Arlie poked him in the ribs again. He was clenching a fist, and his face was going a little red, which probably wasn't good for his heart condition. In any other situation, Burl could break Arlie in half, but right here and now being Arlie came with certain undeniable privileges.

In other words, Burl's hands were pretty much tied, and Crush knew that if the old man defended himself he would end up in jail.

Someone was singing about lost dreams on the jukebox, and the smoke was thicker on this side of the bar, around the pool tables. He waved it out of his face and stepped between Burl and Arlie, facing
