I see excellence as a hall mark for all pursuits. I define excellence as doing better today than yesterday, not necessarily doing better than others. Change and positive change are the major components of excellence.

    FIRST WORDS

This book is written to address a silent factor in the lives and activities of man. Though silent, its effects are loud and sometimes very compromising. You might have been a victim of it or a victor by it.

Most human activities are based on this factor. Kindly permit me to call it a secret. It is invisible, very difficult to track or trace yet very operational and active, is called MOTIVE.

One evening, I met a man I respect very much. We decided to sit at a quiet place and chat since it’s been years we saw each other. As He began to talk, He made a profound statement which drew my attention to something which eludes the world or the world gives less attention. I am not trying to condemn the world here please. I asked him what is his guiding principle in life and ministry, and then He responded MOTIVES.

He further explained that He doesn’t do things because they are good, based on someone’s judgment but rather, He does things when He has right motives for the things. A careful analysis of what is behind or what propel an action or an initiative was what he was showing me and teaching me. Then I saw that this generation is at risk of compromising because the fast pace of things and the pressures of life doesn’t permit us to first consider most of our motives before we embark on our pursuits and adventures. We are challenged by contributions and influence from the THE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC OPINION. We are shocked when our relationships turn out to be something we least expected them to be. When governments are not meeting our needs and are doing contrary to their manifestos and budgets we stand in awe. And when after so many years we access our lives and find out that we have been on the wrong paths, in the wrong company and on the wrong pursuit, we begin to shift blames forgetting thing it’s our motives that weren’t right.

When we cast our eyes around, we see so many people in pain, hurt and disappointed. Lawlessness is on the rise and we device solutions to eradicate or combat these societal problems but to no avail. World leaders and global institutions are trying their best to make the world a better place but it is unfortunate the light gets dimer every now and then. The same problems and challenges keeps occurring and we device means of addressing them but I think though our measures are result-oriented, these measures will produce results when it first tackles the motives of entities and personalities behind this challenges.

It is time we lift the veil and deal with the issues beyond curtain. Beyond what we say, see and do is that silent secret ruler called Motives. As you join me in this exclusive piece of work, I know we will be able to address personal, corporate, organizational issues in the right way. You will be well convinced and empowered in your pursuit from henceforth because you will be in control of your MOTIVES. Welcome on board.

    CHAPTER ONE: WHAT MOTIVE(S) IS

In our personal and corporate lives, we all in one way or the other try to understand so many happenings and actions. The efforts we make to understand these things might be borne out of pain, grieve, joy , expectations, suspicions just to mention a few.

I often wonder why some people act in a certain way or manner, and sometimes I am perplexed at myself doing or reacting in a way. The feeling and efforts of trying to discover what might be behind the good happenings and the bad happening as well leads us to the subject of MOTIVE(S)

Motive(s) can be explained with the following words- INCENTIVES, CAUSE, PURPOSE OBJECT, INDUCEMENT, AIM, GOAL, MOTIVATION, INCITEMENT, STIMULUS, RATIONALE, BASIS, GROUND, OCCASION, CONSIDERATION, IDEA,IMPULSE, LURE,SPUR, GOAN, the list goes on and on. From the explained context, motive(s) can be deduced as the propelling force or power that causes or engineers an action or reaction. In this book, I will like to limit the writings from the perspective of identifying motive(s) as a thought or mindset. The most powerful force that has led to the rise and fall of nations and persons has been linked to motive(s). It is characterized by so many features and that makes it strong and unique. Something is driving you, and something is driving me. Our parents and leaders are been driven by something. The security institutions are driven by something as well as the criminals. The earlier we accept this fact and reality the better. We are all been driven by motives consciously and unconsciously.

In the corporate world, it’s expressed through MISSION STATEMENTS and VISION STATEMENTS, so stakeholders begin to oppose corporations when pursuits are not in line with mission statements and vision statements. The government and political leaders also expresses their motives through their MANIFESTOS and BUDGETS. Citizens turn to the street on demonstration; embark on strike actions when these manifestos and budgets are inconsistent with operations
