Kunoichi: Fury of the Ninja
(Synne City Super Heroine in Peril)
The Japanese-American heroine eased down the dark alley, all senses on alert. Kunoichi's bright brown eyes darted left and right, up and down, looking for Randy Stiles. The tall, dark-haired drug pusher had escaped police custody shortly after she'd turned him over to them earlier that evening.
It was past midnight and the alley had no lights. The moon was almost full and high in the sky, but not positioned to cast any light down that alley. Kunoichi's costume was mostly black, with gold trim and decoration. She was nothing but a shadowy figure, and quiet as a mouse.
I cannot believe the police let this man escape, she thought. The Synne City Police were infamous for being corrupt. She couldn't help but think that Randy had bribed the officer transporting him to the city jail for processing. Of course, he is trained as a ninja, so...
Kunoichi met him at the local Ninjutsu dojo during a cultural event in Little Tokyo a week earlier, before she knew he was a filthy drug pusher. She learned afterward that the dojo's founder was the world's top assassin. Randy was one of the teachers, and a black belt in a several martial arts. As her secret alter ego, Kyoko Anderson, she'd been training in Ninjutsu all of her life, from before she could remember.
The fact he was a fellow ninja
made her angrier than normal with his illegal trade. In her mind, he was dishonoring the Ninjutsu dojo and their art. Defeating and capturing him hadn't been easy. As a super heroine, she was more skilled and much stronger, but he'd fought hard and long. And now she had to do it all over again.
A tiny sound brought her to a stop. She held her breath, listening. Cocking her head this way and that. Randy ran down this alley trying to escape her. The other end was blocked, so he was still in there. Waiting. Desperate. Very dangerous.
A ninjato sword was in her left hand. It was basically a shorter, straighter katana. Common belief said it was the sword of the ninjas, but that wasn't necessarily true. It had become the unofficial sword of the modern ninja, but she suspected that was more to distinguish the ninja and their weaponry from the Samurai and their katana. She actually preferred using a katana, but sometimes the ninjato fit her needs better. It just happened to be the sword she chose to carry that night.
As a drug pusher, Randy didn't rely on his ninja fighting skills, but on the pistols all pushers seemed to carry. As a super heroine, and descendant of the ancient Amazons, Kunoichi was immune to bullets and other missile weapons. But her only protection against edged weaponry was her ninja skills and lightning-fast reflexes. The pusher knew all of that as well, and would be ready for her accordingly.
She stopped halfway down the alley, afraid that she'd pass by his hiding place and he'd slip away behind her. Kunoichi needed to flush the pusher out. So she reached under the gold sash wrapped several times around her narrow waist, and into a leather pouch holding some shuriken. The flat steel ninja stars
were one of her favorite weapons. People irrationally feared them, while they were one of her most non-lethal weapons.
Hai!
she cried, throwing a shuriken with great strength to bounce off the brick wall and clank down the silent alley.
Shit!
she heard a man cry. Randy jumped up from behind a pile of trash just ten feet away.
He charged her, crying out in rage. Kunoichi moved in silently, sword at the ready. As he closed in, she caught the glint of faint light off a knife blade. Her sword flashed, striking with perfect timing and aim, and struck the pusher's knife just below the guard. Randy cried out in pain as his weapon clattered away.
Hai!
she cried, leaping up and spinning as he ducked and lunged at her. She brought the blunt back edge of the sword down at his left shoulder. Surrender, Randy, or suffer the consequences!
He dodged just enough so that her blade struck the fleshy upper arm. A broken shoulder or collarbone would've ended the fight. He lashed out with a thrust kick as her feet touched the ground, connecting with her right side just below the ribs. She was already spinning away from him, so the strike was relatively light.
Make me, Kunoichi,
he growled as he rushed her.
She never saw his uppercut, but was alerted by the movement of his shoulders. She dodged that blow, delivering a kick to his thigh just above the right knee. She struck him with her long stiletto heel, and he grunted with pain. As he reached for his injured leg, she slapped the flat of her blade into the side of his head.
Bitch,
he said, rolling with the blow. You think you can toy with me like that?
He came to a
