This is a work of fiction. Any resemblances to actual persons or events is purely coincidental unless otherwise noted.

Alfonso was raised in a place much like this. He had a good mind for solving puzzles. He had just finished Police Academy, specialist in maritime law enforcement.

There were no open cases to be assigned. He was patrol, but had the option of investigating any cold case if he could find evidence that could lead to conviction.

He knew the area intimately in his two weeks on the job. He would get bored if he didn’t find something to concentrate his talents on.

Then he found a file concerning four unsolved murders. On Crab Island.

It would be something to do.

Then things started getting weird. What had he stumbled onto? There was nothing on Crab Island but mangroves!

    About the author

CD Moulton has traveled extensively over much of the world both in the music business, where he was a rock guitarist, songwriter, and arranger, and in an import/export business. He has been everything from a bar owner to auto salvage (junkyard) manager, longshoreman to high steel worker, orchid grower to landscaper, tropical fish farmer to commercial fisherman. He started writing books in 1983 and has published more than 175 books as of January 1, 2013. His most popular books to date are about research with orchids, though much of his science fiction and fantasy work has proven popular. He wrote the CD Grimes, PI series and the Det. Nick Storie series, among other works.

He now resides in Gualaca, Panamá, where he writes the Clint Faraday mystery series, plays music with friends – and pursues his favorite ways to spend his time: beach bum and roaming the mountain jungles doing botanical research. He has lately become involved in fighting for the rights of the indigenous people, who are among his closest friends, and in fighting the extreme corruption in the courts and police in Panamá.

He offers the free e-book, Fading Paradise, that explains what he has been through because of the corruption.

Alfonso Mercedes, or Alf, looked over the water at the island. Crab Island was fairly large for what it was, a mangrove head. It covered about six hectares. There were some large boulders and a lot of rocks and gravel and mangroves. There was nothing there. He had just completed a slow and careful look at the entire shoreline. It was called Crab Island, English, instead of Isla Cangrejos because a gringo named it that.

The new blue and white (the worst colors for boats. Upright, it was hard to see from above because it would blend with the clear Caribbean water. Upside down, it was too much the color of the sandy bottom.

Some politician thought the colors were good for police boats. They were always visible from the side.

So the outlaws or whatever could see them coming from a long way off?

Alf didn’t think much of politicians.

Why he was here investigating a cold case came about when ...

Alfonso Mercedes, you swear to uphold the law to the best of your ability at all times and to protect the people who give you the authority to hold this position, blah, blah, blah.

A politician sure as hell wrote that oath! ‘Protect the people who gave you the authority?’ Not to protect all the people? Bullshit! I considered
