    About the Author

    Introduction

    Why did I develop this workbook? I was ministering in a church in another country. It was a midweek service with about 80 people in attendance. After preaching, I was preparing to call people to the altar for prayer. I had a plan for prayer, but I heard the Lord speak to me. I felt He wanted me to find out how many people knew they heard His voice. So I asked the congregation how many knew that they knew the voice of the Lord. Only about 15 people raised their hands. I asked a second time and the same hands went up.

    I explained that a healthy relationship with anyone, but especially the Lord, is characterized by communication. I told them there was no magic formula to hearing God's voice, and I could pray for their spiritual ears to be open. Four people responded. Although I continued to invite others for prayer, only the four responded.

    This was shocking and disturbing for me. The best parts of being saved to me are a relationship and an ongoing communication with God. There may be many reasons why people did not respond. Whether they were afraid to come forward or didn’t see the need to have someone pray for them to hear God's voice, they didn’t come forward. They may have wanted to pray the prayer in private. Or it could have simply been apathy. No matter the reason, I was grieved by this.

    Out of that experience, I developed this workbook. Every believer should and is expected to hear and know God’s voice. Prayerfully, this workbook will assist you in developing your spiritual ears and conversations with the Lord.

    Lord, I thank You for creating us to know You. I thank You that through our Savior Jesus Christ, we have come into deep relationship and intimate communication with You. I thank You for speaking to us and always hearing us when we converse with You. I ask you, Father, to open the spiritual ears of those who struggle to hear Your voice. I renounce fear and any training that taught them that You no longer personally speak to Your people. Let all who seek You know Your voice. May all those who complete this workbook grow closer to You and reach new levels of intimacy in communication with You. Amen

    God - The Original Great Communicator

    There is an undisputable truth that persists from generation to generation. God speaks. As you read the Bible from cover to cover, there is one consistent fact that is present. God speaks to His people.

    "Indeed God speaks once,

    Or twice, yet no one notices it.

    "In a dream, a vision of the night,

    When sound sleep falls on men,

    While they slumber in their beds,

    Then He opens the ears of men,

    And seals their instruction,

    That He may turn man aside from his conduct,

    And keep man from pride;

    He keeps back his soul from the pit,

    And his life from passing over into Sheol.

    (Job 33:14-18 NAS)

    When God speaks a matter is settled. He is well able to speak and fulfill His word. We can trust the Lord when He speaks.

    "Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, None of My words will be delayed any longer. Whatever word I speak will be performed,’" declares the Lord God. (Ezekiel 12:28 NAS)

    The voice of the Lord is powerful and distinct as it speaks in nature.

    Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of the mighty,

    Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

    Ascribe to the Lord the glory due to His name;

    Worship the Lord in holy array.

    The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;

    The God of glory thunders,

    The Lord is over many waters.

    The voice of the Lord is powerful,

    The voice of the Lord is majestic.

    The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;

    Yes, the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

    He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,

    And Sirion like a young wild ox.

    The voice of the Lord hews out flames of fire.

    The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;

    The Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

    The voice of the Lord makes the deer to calve

    And strips the forests bare;

    And in His temple everything says, Glory!

    The Lord sat as King at the flood;

    Yes, the Lord sits as King forever.

    The Lord will give strength to His people;

    The Lord will bless His people with peace.

    (Psalm 29:1-11 NAS)

    The God of the universe started it all with His spoken word and He continues to speak today. He wants to communicate with man.

    What is man that You take thought of him,

    And the son of man that You care for him?

    (Psalm 8:4 NAS)

    It is almost beyond comprehension that the God of the universe whose voice can shake the desert is not only mindful of us but wants to communicate with us.

    God Started It All By Speaking

    God started everything by speaking. His words are full of life and power and are spoken with purpose. They are never empty or idle. He speaks to fulfill purpose and destiny in His people. God speaks to bring life and it is impossible for His word to fail.

    So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth;

    It will not return to Me empty,

    Without accomplishing what I desire,

    And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.

    (Isaiah 55:11 NAS)

    Throughout the account of the creation, we understand that God is speaking. Each time He spoke, something happened. He spoke light, light happened. He spoke a separation of the waters and the waters separated. He spoke life into the seas and the water was teeming with living creatures.

    And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.

    (Genesis 1:3 NIV)

    Then God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

    (Genesis 1:6 NKJV)

    Then God said, Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens. (Genesis 1:20 NKJV)

    There are several important points about God speaking in creation.

    1. There is active or activating power in God’s voice.

    2. There is a response to His speaking

    3. His response was received or heard for action to take place.

    Man or mankind is created in God’s image and with His ability to communicate.
