    Chapter 1

Twelve-year-old Zac Miller peered through the viewfinder of his telescope in search of aliens. He had a clear view of all the stars and constellations through the woods outside his two-story bedroom window. Carl Greene, his best friend, played Space Clone Blaster II while waiting for his turn. A slice of olive and mushroom pizza hung from his mouth.

You know, aliens love mushrooms, Carl said while blasting a spaceship out of the video game atmosphere and chewing a bite of his pizza.

I don’t know about that, Zac said, still studying the summer night sky.

Really, Carl said. I watched it on a YouTube video.

Not everything on YouTube is real.

Carl ignored Zac and went back to the video game. He was so close to completing level four when Zac’s mom knocked and opened the door.

You guys, lights out. I know it’s summer vacation, but it’s already… She glanced at Zac’s alarm clock on the nightstand, …10:30.

Aw man, Carl complained. I just got to level five.

Zac’s mom studied the blown-up UFO and dead aliens on the television screen and grimaced. The aliens looked almost real with their four catlike eyes and green humanlike bodies.

    Is this your game, Zac?

He turned away from the window and faced his mom. No, it’s Carl’s.

    Seems a little…inappropriate, don’t you think?

We’ll play something new tomorrow night.

Zac’s mom picked up the half-full pizza box. You boys are still eating pizza this late at night?

Carl shoved the last of his piece into his mouth, feeling somewhat guilty for downing food past bedtime.

I’ll take this to the kitchen, she said.

Zac slumped onto his bed, suddenly tired. We’ll have it for lunch tomorrow.

Carl shut off the TV and crawled into his sleeping bag as Zac’s mom turned out the light. As she left, she lifted the lid of the box. Oooh, mushrooms, she said under her breath.

Later that night, as the boys slept, a crack of thunder like bowling balls against pins sounded through the open window. A cool breeze drifted in as the black night lit up with a lightning bolt. The alarm clock read 12:00 am. Carl turned in his sleep and let out a snort. Another crash of thunder and a zigzag of lightning came, and the alarm clock flickered out.

    Chapter 2

When the boys woke up in the morning, the alarm clock flashed 6:00 am.

Carl rubbed his eyes. Aw man, it’s too early to get up. It’s only six o’clock.

You idiot, it’s not six. The power went out some time in the night, Zac said, gesturing to the blinking clock. It’s probably nine.

Geez, I didn’t know! Carl said, throwing his hands out.

Zac got out of bed and went to the bathroom while Carl turned the television back on to Space Clone Blaster II.

The toilet flushed, and Zac stepped out of the bathroom right as the aroma of bacon filled their noses.

Ah, heaven! Carl said, taking in the scent and immediately abandoning his video game.

The boys rushed downstairs, nearly tumbling over one another to be the first to reach the breakfast meat.

As Zac’s mom served up pancakes and bacon for both boys, she sat down at the table. So what are you two up to today?

Just some skateboarding, said Zac, chewing some of his bacon.

Yeah. I have this totally awesome new trick I want to try out, said Carl, bacon bits and pancake pieces rolling around in his open mouth.

When the boys finished eating and rinsing their plates, they grabbed their skateboards and rolled down the street to the park.

Do you think we’ll finally find a spaceship tonight? asked Carl.

They talked over the popping sound of skateboard wheels on pavement cracks. A car passed by, kicking out smoke from its tail pipe.

Nasty! Carl yelled into Zac’s ear. I bet aliens don’t pollute outer space like that.

I wouldn’t be so sure, Zac said, holding his ear. "We won’t know
