Pagliaccio the Opera Cat

Chapter 1
Pagliaccio. That's not an easy name for a cat, even if you're Italian, which he was. But cats need names which suit them, and that name suited him very well indeed.
Pah-lyee-atch-tcho. That's how you say it. It means 'clown' in Italian. Pagliaccio was a white cat, with little black circles round his eyes and a big black smudge on his nose, and a grey tabby tail, and everyone always thought he looked like a clown. That's why he had such a funny name.
And he was an opera cat. He might have been born in an alleyway and lived in the gutter, but now he lived with Giuseppe and Giuseppina in an expensive flat in the middle of Milan, and followed his master over the road to his work in the opera house almost every day. (Not quite every day, because cats like to keep their human companions guessing. Pagliaccio knew he should never become predictable.)
Giuseppe was an immensely dignified man with huge white whiskers (which Pagliaccio rather envied) and an aquiline nose, but there was one thing he could never get right - his hair always
