About this ebook

A young boy's birthday celebration is joyously enhanced by the thrilling sleight-of-hand of a travelling magician. All in all, the Year of Our Lord 1367 was boasting memorably fair until, only hours later, the playful boy is missing, his mother is frantic, and Bertram, Gautier and Robert lend their aid in the search. Meanwhile, the spectre of another darkly cryptic travelling stranger casts a shadow over the formerly peaceful village of Gatesbury, while the villagers grumble about suddenly missing valuables. Faced with this stress-packed mystery, as convoluted as the malevolent imagination that created it, Gautier's usual good-humour is transformed into an unprecedented deadly rage. Danger and destruction hover over innocent and evil alike – but on whom will it fall?

Now You See It is Book III of The Sword and the Spirit Adventures. Set in 14th Century England, this suspense-packed action-adventure will renew your faith in good people, give you reason to challenge your preconceptions about the human mind, while the story keeps you guessing until the end.

This book is dedicated to my girls.

    Fun. Joyous. Magical.

    Prologue

The daggers flew, slicing the air viciously, not hitting anyone but looking sinister and dangerous. Jamie Jerreaux watched open-mouthed, transfixed, afraid of what would happen when the gleaming blades finally devastated flesh, as they surely would. Should he watch or run? Would the gore and blood make him sick to his stomach? Or, was he strong enough? Today he was turning eight years old and he was ready to demonstrate to others that he was a baby no longer. He would stay. He would watch. Not that he really had much choice. He was hypnotized by the whirring and whirling silver knives.

Then, as if in one beautiful but deadly climax, all four blades arced simultaneously high, brilliantly reflecting the blazing noon sun, blinding Jamie. He shielded his eyes with his hand and tried to concentrate on the spinning weapons.

What was that? Where did that come from? There, in mid-air, appeared a red scarf – No! Not a scarf, a bag! And, as Jamie’s eyes and mouth gaped in bewildered amazement, each blade hurtled downward and disappeared into the red bag!

With a quick flourish of his hand, the juggler twisted the gold cord connected to the bag, closing it and trapping the four daggers safely inside, and twirled the bag over his head in three perfect circles before bringing it down to his side with a sudden stop of precisely executed control!

The juggler held both hands out wide, signalling to the gathered crowd that the trick was finished. The amazed onlookers cheered lustily and whistled in enthusiastic approval. He smiled – He had them!

Fair ladies! Noble gentlemen! And, all you wonderful children! I am humbled by your very kind encouragement. For a poor entertainer, your applause is nectar of the Gods. I live only to serve your pleasure. If you are entertained, I am utterly satisfied! He bowed deeply, sweeping his hat low almost brushing the earth.

Jamie thought that this was the most wonderful man in the world!

Friends, your lowly servant will feast luxuriously on your applause for many days to come. Permit me to add that your appreciation in a more tangible form would also be welcome. A few copper coins perhaps, a lunch or snack, an empty warm hayloft for a good night’s sleep, perhaps. I know that your generosity will be overwhelming in comparison to my meagre gifts on display for you. I will remain in this exquisite town for the next week. I look forward to becoming better acquainted with all of you good folk.

He paused long enough to bend over and gather his bags arranged at his feet. With a sudden and grand flourish he rose and shouted, My name is D’Ormain! For now, Farewell!

A puff of orange smoke erupted at his feet
