    Chapter 1

    Seven months ago

Melinda flattened her back against the wall, next to the open door.

The suspect, a white male in his early forties with a penchant for blowing things up, was inside, waiting. The gun felt bulky; next time, she was buying her own – a slim Glock or maybe a 9mm, even. She was athletic and she’d beaten the record for pushups in her FBI academy class, but the thing in her hands was feeling pretty damned heavy. Perspiration beaded at the back of her neck where her brown hair was held up in a short ponytail. Well, she could stand here all day, she thought, and hope he would give up, or, she could talk to him until one of them got bored, or... she could try something else.

She held her hands up, gun pointed at the ceiling of the old, decaying school building. Taking three short breaths, she turned into the doorway quickly, ready to dart out again, if the suspect was pointing a weapon at her. She lucked out; not only was the guy not pointing a weapon at her, he wasn’t even there.

Oh, come on, she hissed through clenched teeth. Melinda had chased this guy down the equivalent of three city blocks to corner him in here, a second story of the school building, with no other way out of here; and he was just gone?

    Give me a break.

She looked around and across the empty room, she noticed instantly that one of the windows stood open, stiff to the summer breeze. She considered quickly whether he had jumped because there wasn’t anything else in the room except the cracked blackboard at the other end of the wall. The window had to be where the suspect went, she reasoned.

Still, she had a feeling she was missing something. Scanning the room more closely, Melinda took in the scraps of paper on the floor, the bits of chalk on the blackboard’s tray, the spider webs in the corner where the wall met the drop ceiling...That was it; she knew instantly that was what she had missed. Getting a good grip on her gun again, she scanned the tiles lining the wall, one at a time. Melinda counted the number of tiles, taking into account the suspect’s height and weight then quickly fired three rounds into the soft ceiling tiles, moved her position ten paces to the right, just in case of return fire. No shots were returned, just a medium-sized man in his early forties, falling down in a cloud of asbestos, dust and metal tile support rails. Melinda had her foot on the back of the suspect’s neck and the barrel of her gun to the back of his skull before he could get up. Don’t move, she said. FBI. You’re under arrest.

I can’t believe you found me, he said while coughing. I’ve done that trick with every cadet in your class and every single one of them would try to find a way to climb out the window after me. Sean Sloan was Senior Instructor at the FBI academy in Quantico.

Then you’d come up behind and shot them, right? she held out her hand to help him up.

You got it. He righted and dusted himself off and held his shoulder while he flexed his arm. I may need to incorporate a mattress into this scenario. Falling onto that floor hurts.

At least you only had to do it once, Melinda pointed out. The paint rounds hurt?

Nah, besides, he said, rapping his knuckles against his crotch, I’m wearing my cup. Melinda blushed. Her Senior Instructor might be twenty some-odd years older than her, but he was a strikingly good-looking man nonetheless, with ripped abs and strong arms. Every girl in Melinda’s class had fantasized about being held by those arms. In fact, his dark skin and chiseled face had shown up in a few of Melinda’s dreams recently; they were very hot, very vivid dreams.

So tell me something, he said, as they walked out into the empty halls of the training building. How’d you guess I was up in the ceiling? I didn’t have any easy way to get up there and I made sure it looked impossible.

It did, she admitted, then she shrugged. I just know, sometimes. I could feel when something isn’t right. Besides, just because something looks impossible doesn’t mean you should ignore the possibility. He only looked at her, in response, an unreadable expression.

You’re going to have a good career at the Bureau, Cadet Warren. I think there’s a couple of choice positions I can recommend you for. She felt her face flush but this time, at the word ‘positions,’ her mind raced to the nighttime images. She smiled, hiding her thoughts.

Thank you, sir. I really appreciate that.

He winked at her, but Melinda knew
