About this ebook

The Way It Was
Excerpts from Book I written by my father, Alan Thompson:
“Many of the old farmhouses would be desperately cold if we got several days of really hard weather. I remember sleeping in one bedroom that was so cold, when I went to bed, instead of removing my clothing, I put more on. I would go to bed with heavy winter underwear, a heavy lumberjack shirt, a pair of tweed breeches, two pairs of woolen socks, plus a pullover sweater, and on top of that, another sweater. The bed would have several blankets on it, but all that bedroom did was keep out the wind and snow. My rubber boots would be frozen so hard in the morning it was almost impossible to get them on. I could hardly wait to get my breakfast, get my axe and go to the bush to get warmed up”
Excerpt from Book II written by my mother, Betty Thompson:
“When my Uncle Rob MacFarlane needed someone to help on the farm, he hired a man from Lanark County where Rob and my Dad grew up. The first time he sent Alan to our farm next door with the horses and wagon to borrow something, I was upstairs helping Mother, but I made an excuse to come down so I could look out the window as he passed, and get a glimpse of him. The next Sunday he sat in church with Uncle Rob and Aunt Nellie and since I was singing in the choir, I had a better look at him.”

My Health, My Way
Following is part of a comment by one of my sisters, which explains why I lied to everyone about my cancer diagnosis – until I wrote this book.
‘What a story- very powerful and positive. And I think you did best not telling Mom. I had called her for a chat just before your surgery, and she was really upset, convinced you were going to die. Aunt Jean had said to her that your symptoms were the same as Uncle Lloyd's (Mom’s brother). Mom said she hoped our annual Westport weekend hadn’t been booked, because she didn't think you'd be around to see it. I talked for a bit, and then later called her back to see if she'd calmed down or needed me to go up to stay for a few days. She said she'd be okay, so I made more encouraging remarks and left it. You'd have had her fears (and ours) to deal with as well as your own concerns. So very glad you're still around and loving life!’

Huna: Your Power Tool For The Twenty-first Century
The magic of the ancient Hawaiian Kahunas was a fascinating and informative subject to study. Our journey began in nineteen-eighty-six and has continued throughout our lives. We studied meditation, dream recall and analysis, alternate healing techniques, finding parking spaces, altering weather, and many other interesting practices. This book documents some of our experiences, and includes four trance sessions by three different mediums. Three sessions deal with the Kahunas and how they performed their ‘magic’. The other session teaches us how to recall and interpret our dreams, whereby we can obtain guidance in our lives – something that helped me immensely while I was healing myself of cancer.

Jean MacIntyre

I have been writing for about twenty-five years, while working firstly as a Registered Nurse and later as a Farm Insurance Underwriter. My first four novels were mainly for learning purposes and have long since been discarded – something I now regret. One of them was accepted for publication as an audio book, but the company went out of business before it could be processed. That gave me the encouragement I needed to keep on writing. I have since written eight romance novels, three non-fiction books, and two books of short stories. I have taken up amateur photography and am combining it with writing limericks, to produce photo album books about care for the environment and respect for all life-forms. These are aimed at children. Our local camera club has taught me what I needed to know in order to create my book covers and I am truly grateful. I live in the beautiful Lanark Highlands of Eastern Ontario, Canada, with my husband Don, and a very independent cat named Little Bud.
