About this ebook

When the Acadians were exiled from Nova Scotia with only the clothes on their backs, how did they survive the journey from Canada to South Louisiana? How did they travel? What did they eat? How did they acquire their needs-food, clothing, and shelter? What dangers did they encounter on their journey? It took extraordinary people to accept the challenge of traveling across an entire nation to find a new home.

I tried to imagine what the Acadians went through in route to their new home. This fictional story is about their journey and the obstacles they faced to find a permanent place to live. It not based on real events nor is it based on real people. The characters’ first and last names are the only things true to the Acadians.

I hope you enjoy my story.

    Preface

During the 1750’s, Acadians were exiled from Nova Scotia because of their refusal to recognize English rule. It is unimaginable how dreadful the English military treated the honest, hard-working Acadians. They were forced to leave their homes with only the clothes on their backs. They survived insurmountable odds on their passage from Canada to find a permanent home in South Louisiana.

Having heard the story of the exile many times, I wondered how the Acadians survived the journey. What route did they take? What food did they eat? How did they get their food? Where did they get their goods and supplies? The questions go on and on.

I could only imagine what happened on the journey, so I wrote about it. This story depicts the events of six fictional families on the last leg of their journey. They traveled in three flat boats: two boats were used to carry the families and a third was used to carry goods and supplies.

It is admirable that the Acadians had immense faith, courage, and will power to cross an entire nation in search of a permanent place to live. How remarkable is that?

    Chapter 1

It was the morning after the Acadians’ arrival at this new location. Everyone had gone to bed tired from unloading the boats and setting up camp.

Sadie! Sadie! Wake up, wake up! shouted Marie. Sadie, an energetic seven-year-old, opened her eyes to the hustle and bustle of the Acadian women engaged in their morning chores. As she washed her face and changed from her nightclothes, she listened and watched the women chatting as they did their morning chores-making bread, washing and mending clothes, cooking roux, and boiling water for drinking. Marie Broussard, who was expecting her third child, was the teacher in the group. She taught the children their lessons
