Andryi Kokotuha was born in 1970 in Nizhyn into the family of a welder and a nurse. He wrote his first work of fiction at the age of seven, although actual artistic properties of that first one remain till this day unappreciated. By the age of twelve, Andryi starts composing and reciting fairy tales and cherishes a dream of becoming a librarian. Instead, he works as a furniture assembler, random laborer and bricklayer on construction sites. Kokotuha graduates from the Department of Journalism at the University of Shevchenko. His first story is published in 1987. In 1991 he writes a criminal novella Frogs’ Mating Dance, which, for the lack of other examples of prose, receives a literary award of the publishing house Smoloskip in 1995. After its release in 1996, the novella gets called ‘a novel’ and receives a positive review from the author’s parents and friends, and largely negative publicity in the press. That circumstance alone allows Anryi Kokotuha to immediately become one of the famous contemporary Ukrainian writers. Kokotuha continues working at the publishing house Smoloskip packaging books, and in the period from 1994 to 1999 organizes a large number of tours for young Ukrainian authors in seventeen Ukrainian provinces, also being a participant of one such tour. In 1998 Andryi leaves Smoloskip in connection to a new job directly involving his skills as a journalist. Cooperation with Smoloskip continues till 1999 when the publishing house officially cuts off ties with Kokotuha, motivating the move by the author’s anti-Ukrainian tunes expressed in a publicly read lampoon about the current state of Ukrainian culture. Ніжині, в родині зварювальника і медичної сестри. Перший художній твір написав у віці 7 років. Хоча власне художні якості цього твору досі ніким не оцінені. До 12 років читав і писав лишен казки. Мріяв стати бібліотекарем. Працював збиральником меблів, різноробочим та муляром на будівництві. Але закінчив факультет журналістики Київського університету ім Т. Шевченка. Перше оповідання опубліковане в 1987 році. У 1991 році написав кримінальну повість «Шлюбні ігрища жаб», яка, через брак інших зразків прози, отримала в 1995 році нагороду видавництва «Смолоскип». Після виходу окремою книжкою в 1996 році повість стала називатися «романом», отримала позитивну оцінку від батьків та друзів автора, і широкий негативний розголос у пресі. Завдяки чому А. Кокотюха відразу став одним із відомих сучасних українських письменників. Працюючи у видавництві «Смолоскип» пакувальником книжок, у період з 1994 по 1999 рік організовав понад сто «гастролей» молодих українських письменників у сімнядцяти регіонах України. Був їх безпосереднім учасником. У 1998 році звільнився з видавництва «Смолоскип» у зв`язку з переходом на іншу роботу, безпосередньо пов`язану з журналістикою. Співпрацю зі «Смолоскипом» не припиняв до 1999 року. Потім видавництво офіційно розірвало стосунки з молодим письменником через його «антиукраїнські» настрої. Вони полягали в публічному прочитанні фейлетону про сучасний стан української культури.
