    INTRODUCTION

The origins of the Tarot are a mystery. Many theories and legends have built up around the cards due to their intriguing symbolism and the sense of wonder they always seem to inspire. Some say the Tarot originated in India or Iran; others believe Tarot cards came from China and were brought to the West by gypsies or Arab invaders of Spain. The earliest existing Tarot cards date from the 1390s.

Unlike normal playing cards, the cards in the Tarot deck which have a top and bottom, depending on the position of the card depicted. A card is therefore said to be reversed when it appears upside down in a spread, and as reversed cards hold different meanings from upright cards, the position of the cards is significant in a reading.

The symbols on Tarot cards relate to everyday experiences, people, objects, events and feelings. Just as our lives are made up of both positive and negative experiences, some of these vivid images are very beautiful and inspiring, whilst some can be disturbing. The Tarot seems to act like a mirror, reflecting the atmosphere and circumstances of the moment at which they were consulted and showing too all the opportunities which that moment can offer.

Interpreted correctly, the symbolism carried by the cards can provide amazing insight into your life. This unique form of divination can give you a deeper understanding of your love-life, your career, your family and friends, your health and your future prospects. It can also enable you to clarify and overcome specific problems in your life.

    The Origins of the Tarot

The Tarot goes so far back in history that the exact origins and purpose have been lost in time. It has been linked with the ancient Chinese, the Egyptians and the Hindus as well as the Chaldeans, the Greeks, the Hebrews and the Columbian Indians. There is evidence that there were playing cards in China in the tenth century and it is likely that cards came to Europe in the late 1300s. In 1392, King Charles VI of France purchased three packs of cards, gilded and coloured and ornamented and these were supplied to the king for his amusement. There are more references to cards in the 1400s but there is no certainty on what these cards looked like.

The Tarot is rich in symbolism and the present system has been developed through the changing religions, history and myths of our past. Tarot Packs in Germany, in the eighteenth century, for instance, showed scenes from popular operas, legendary animals and monsters, explorers riding on camels and these bear little relation to older designs. The court cards were often characters from history or mythology. In French packs, for instance, the kings may have been Alexander, David and Charlemagne. Many different tarots were used in Italy up until the end of the seventeenth century and the standard, modern Tarot pack is derived from the Venetian or Marseilles pack of seventy-eight tarot cards.

Although originally used as 'entertainment', by the eighteenth century, cards were being used for divination.

How can the Ancient Tarot reflect Modern Lifestyles?

The Tarot is an ancient method of giving wisdom and guidance. But as old as the cards happen to be, they will never be outdated. They relate as much to the present, modern-way-of-life, as they did to ancient times. Think about it and there are a lot of things that will always be the same: things such as: love, family relationships, money, work and ambitions.

That’s why the cards can pertain as much to the matter in hand now as they did in ancient times.  Once you learn more about and start to tune into your tarot deck, you will discover how the cards can help you understand yourself and your circumstances better. They will build up a picture and you, as remember you are at the centre of that picture. Maybe they won't give you the solution to all your questions, but the cards will certainly guide you on where you should be looking to find the answers.

As you deal the cards, either for yourself or for another person, they will relate to your or their thoughts, feelings and hopes at the very moment in time the cards were shuffled.
