Gluten-free food products may work wonders for those with celiac disease or are gluten-intolerant. However, in recent years, gluten-free diets have also spurred interest among those who want to avoid carbohydrates, lose weight, increase energy, and eat healthier. Some may consider gluten-free diets a fad, but the growing number of people who have now gone gluten-free, as well as the number of gluten-free food products now sold in the market – from around 103 in 2003 to over 830 in 2008, as statistics show – has skyrocketed. Studies have also shown gluten-free products to provide several health benefits
What's Inside a Gluten-Free Diet?
A gluten-free diet is devised primarily for those who are sensitive or intolerant to gluten, or are suffering from celiac disease. Gluten is a type of protein that is commonly found in, and an essential component of, basic food items like rye, grain, wheat, bread, and cereals. If you have just been tested positive for celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, the first thing that doctors will advise is for you to go gluten-free. This is to prevent inflammation and the development of chronic diseases, as well as to avoid getting malnourished. Fortunately, there are several food products that are naturally gluten-free, like fresh eggs, fruits and vegetables, fresh meat and fish, and most dairy products.
But what could be frustrating is that gluten is as well found in, and is in fact a main ingredient of, our favorite everyday meal – bread, cake, pasta, noodle salad, desserts, shakes, and the like. However, this doesn't mean depriving yourself of the most delicious, pleasure food.
