Paul S Huggins
Having been a fan of horror since an early age Paul Huggins has now made the momentous decision to impart his sickest most terrifying thoughts to paper. Paul is currently working on a supernatural thriller, an apocalypse novel and numerous experimental short stories, mainly with apocalyptic themes. Paul would say zombies are in his blood, but thankfully he is still living.

1 JOURNEY HOME
He no longer had a place to call home. The friends that helped him were gone. There were no more weekend excursions or winter nights in by the fire. It was just a constant struggle to survive where man had lost his grip on the planet, and the foul things that used to be human were everywhere. Everything was closed and nothing worked, or would ever work again.
Toby had to scrape around for food. He slept when it was dark in the safest places he could find. It was always uncomfortable and cold. As long as he steered clear of the walking abominations and kept his wits together he would survive. But it was a day by day life and was always a struggle. Thankfully he had no aspirations when things were normal, he always did what his task masters asked and was always rewarded. This was a distant memory now and even the faces of his friends and especially family were disappearing.
He scrabbled around in the turned over waste container, it was cold outside but he managed to get reasonably cosy having wrapped himself in discarded clothing that lay nearby. Thankfully not many of the flesh eating monsters were around here and so the constant moaning was at a minimum. He slept better than he had for a long time.
He awoke to the sound of scraping. Thin ribbons of light were protruding in from the edges of the flap that used to be the lid of the rectangular trash skip.
Hello, who’s in there?
Said a deep voice on the other side.
It had been a while since Toby had spoken to anyone. He searched for something to say. Timidly he answered the stranger, Just me.
It’s okay kid, I won’t hurt you. There’s none of those freaks around either,
came the friendly reply.
Toby shook the sleepiness from his head. He edged to the flap and tentatively pushed it open. He stretched out into the daylight to wake himself properly.
The stranger stood watching him emerge. My name’s Jed.
He said.
I’m Toby.
He replied, squinting as his eyes got used to the glare.
It’s a pleasure to meet you, I don’t know about you but I’m hungry. Let’s see what’s about. You coming?
he said as he turned to slope off.
Toby was always hungry, and followed Jed. They kept to the edge of the buildings and snouted around for food in the already well looted small town. They came across a service station. The attached shop had been raided many times over. Its door had been twisted at an extreme angle and pellets of shattered glass were spread all around the forecourt.
They crawled in under the broken door on the off chance something had been missed. As they circled the near empty shelves, they inspected the meager contents. Plenty of cleaning products remained untouched, cleanliness being no longer a priority. Along the back wall they came across their goal, although mostly crushed under foot they found some packs of potato chips which had been partially hidden under the edge of the shelving.
The packs may have been wildly out of date, but to the pair it was like a top notch meal. They spent the rest of the day discussing their
