Taken (Rachel and Kevin) - Olivia Garnet
I pushed my brown hair over my shoulder as I set the box on my new desk. I had just gotten the promotion to detective. I was so excited, but I contained my emotions as best as possible. The guys loved to tease anyone who seemed green and inexperienced.
So I guess you're my new partner?
A man's voice said behind me.
Despite myself, I jumped. I was so wrapped up in my own thoughts I wasn't paying attention to what was going on around me.
I turned to find the most handsome guy on the force. He had his hands in his pockets and he smiled at me. His dark hair was brushed back from his forehead, and a strand fell over his full eyebrows. His blue eyes sparkled, and his full cheeks framed his otherwise square face.
Yes, I just got promoted,
I said. I'm Rachel Thayer.
I set the box on the floor and offered him my hand. I hoped he didn't notice my hand was shaking.
He pulled his hand from his pocket and shook my hand. He had a warm, firm grip. A part of me was made even more nervous by the lack of a wedding ring. But I knew he had to have a girlfriend. A guy like him?
I'm Detective Kevin Byron,
he said. Glad to meet you.
Me too,
I said.
I'll be the lead in most of the cases,
he said. Until you're comfortable.
Okay,
I said. I'll watch you and learn as much as I can.
I felt my cheeks growing hot after I said that. I sounded much too eager.
Good,
he said. I learned from the best as well.
He eyed the picture on my desk. Is that your cat?
I nodded.
Cute. Didn't take you for the cat type, though.
What was that supposed to mean? What right did he have commenting on my personal items?
Kevin returned to his desk. The excitement got to me as I sat at my new desk. My belly twisted and turned. I wondered what my first case would be, and how fast we could solve it.
A call came in to Byron's desk. I watched as he answered the phone. His brow furrowed as he listened to the person on the other end.
He hung up the phone, and approached me. I stood, my legs pushing my chair back.
A girl's gone missing,
he said. She was last seen walking to school. We're going to ask around the neighborhood and see if anyone saw anything. Then we'll talk to her parents.
My stomach bottomed. The novelty wore off. I didn't want my first case to be something like this.
I grabbed my gun and badge. Let's go,
I
