Paris: Without the Tourists

About this ebook
Paris is one of the most popular tourist destinations on earth, and for a very good reason; it's a fascinating and fun place to visit. Each year The City of Light greets close to 30 million foreign tourists, and most of them are headed for a select list of the exact same places.
As a result, the lines to get into the most popular museums are long, and once inside it can get unbelievably crowded. Not only that, but the most visited parks, sites, and restaurants – along with the streets around them – are simply crammed with foreign tourists these days. And while these are still must see locations, the fact is that the crush of humanity can become a bit overwhelming at times.
This little book is a guide to some great spots and experiences – all within Paris – that will get you away from the multitude of tourists, and give you a little breathing space to enjoy more of this great city – and enhance your organic contact with a Paris many tourists never see.

I'm a freelance writer of ebooks and blog articles dealing with travel, history, healthy living and art. While my travel writing certainly contains practical information to help people orient themselves to different places, I tend to go a little deeper into the historical context than the average guide book. My theory is the more you know about a place besides its location, the more you see. This is the same philosophy I bring to all the subjects I write about. My goal is to give readers a unique twist on each topic I address in hopes of offering a new way of looking at things that both challenges, and expands the perspective you arrived with.My professional background is in education as a teacher in everything from public schools to adult education, and even a stint in corporate training. When I'm not writing I enjoy spending time reading, hiking, and traveling.I call Marin county in the San Francisco Bay Area home, but I also spend a lot of time in Montreal, Québec.

Introduction
One of the great ironies of modern vacation travel is that we all seek to visit interesting places while simultaneously getting away from the maddening crowd. Few things are more dispiriting than to arrive at a location you've been dying to see for years, only to find that thousands of others got there ahead of you.
When this happens, it suddenly feels like you've just been drafted into the tourist army
as you spend more time trying to find a few inches of space for yourself than you do actually enjoying your surroundings. It's a pretty common experience these days. From the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, to the London Bridge, to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, it just seems that everywhere we go these days, the rest of the world already beat us to it.
Nowhere is this more true than in The City of Light – Paris, France. Each year the capital of France welcomes roughly 30 million visitors, guide books in-hand, and almost all headed for a list of the exact same places scattered across the 20 arrondissements (neighborhoods) of this always popular tourist Mecca.
There are actually areas of Paris where you can walk for blocks - with thousands of people all around you - and never hear French spoken once. The areas around Notre Dame Cathedral, or the Eiffel Tower spring to mind. And the crowds get thicker every year. Finding an available park bench on a
