About this ebook

Be Happy, Stay Happy

We all want the things that we’re sure will make us happy—money, success, independence, love. But when we finally get them, we can find to our surprise that we are the same miserable, moody, or just neutral people we always were. Is that just the way things are

Luckily, no! We can teach ourselves to be happy and enjoy every day, and M.J. Ryan, bestselling author of The Power of Patience and Attitudes of Gratitude, shows us how.

The Happiness Makeover draws on this wide-ranging knowledge and presents a plan that will help readers:
  • clear away happiness hindrances like worry, fear, envy, and grudges
  • discover happiness boosters
  • literally rewire their brains to experience contentment—even joy
  • learn to think optimistically (It really is possible!)

Not a lot new here, nor does the author have a beautiful prose style, but still worth browsing. Some of my favorites are practicing gratefulness, reminding yourself that this is not the end of the story, and learning to think optimistically. "To experience the 10,000 joys," the author quotes writer Jack Kornfield, "you must be willing to touch the 10,000 sorrows."

Ms. Ryan's little book is full of wisdom and practical advice. She has arranged the short chapters in a logical order, building up the case for happiness as well as her credibility as she goes. She starts by assuring the reader "You can be happier" through a one chapter discussion of her own journey toward increased happiness. She next asks the reader "What's standing in your way?" through 17 short chapters that examine happiness barriers. Chapters 18-53, each a short, one-topic essay, give the reader advice on "activating daily happiness." Knowing that we sometimes need a quick fix, she concludes with "twenty-two instant happiness boosters." Ms. Ryan's last paragraph in the final chapter, "loving your life," conveys her intent in writing the book as well as her tone: "May you find joy in your ordinary days and may you bring joy to others through the beauty of your heart, mind, and spirit."
